Hey Wendy, welcome!
I have a friend with a son on the Essex and we used to live in Japan but in Yokosuka. It is a wonderful experience for our sailors. Yay, another new Cobb family :-)

I know we have a few families on these ships, so had to share...

US navy ships visit Vietnam
Last updated: 8/9/2010 14:00

Several US navy ships will arrive in Vietnam this week to help with health and civil engineering cooperative projects with Vietnam People's Navy, according to the US Embassy in Vietnam.

The actions are to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic relationships, the embassy said.

The aircraft carrier USS George Washington was the first to arrive and appeared off the coast of the central city of Da Nang Sunday. It welcomed a delegation of Vietnamese officials that day.

During the visit, local officials met the crew and were told about the operation of the nuclear-powered carrier, now home-ported in Japan’s Yokosuka.

USS George Washington and USS Chung-Hoon and USS McCampbell, together with USS John S. McCain (DDG 56), part of the US Seventh Fleet are also set to come.

Sailordawgmom...I started this yesterday, got distracted and lost everything I wrote! Once an aviator has finished classroom training they get assigned to either planes (T-35 trainer) or helos. This is usually a combination of aviator request and Navy need. Excellent grades go a long way in helping you get what you want. When Chris got to this point and got planes, he moved from P'cola to Milton, FL Whiting Air Station. They train both planes and helos at Whiting. After completion of this phase, there's so many options to choose from. They also break down into those that land on aircraft carriers and those that don't. Jets are VERY competitive and you've got to have excellent grades/top of your class along with what the Navy needs. Chris got jets (T-45 trainer) and went to Meridian MS. Helos, I believe stay on at Whiting. Finally, after successful training (Chris had to also pass landing on an aircraft carrier) they are assigned to their final aircraft and are assigned out to various NAS (Naval Air Station) around the country. Look up Naval Aircraft in Wiki for a long list of options to fly. Hope this helps.
