Mary, Proud Mom of Nick: congrats on the phone calls. Chris called from San Diego just before flying out to his ship on Wednesday. I haven't gotten an email or a phone call since then. Do you think I'm a little over anxious? ;-) Like you hubby, I'm sure this RIMPAC will be one of many. What fun for the families if they can join their sailors in Hawaii!

TGIF ladies - this weather certainly is "summer" like between the heat, humidity and the storms!

J.P. Mom --- there is also an ET in our group who's daughter is now on the USS Geo. Washington, she went to C school in Gulfport, MS @ the Air Force base. ET schools are more scattered.

DianeR. My hubby did a RIMPAC or two in his days :-) It's a good experience for them to be part of.

So did I tell you ladies that I have gotten three phone calls in a week from my deployed sailor? That ship phone works pretty darn good!!!

JP moms - ETs have schools in varied locations and it will depend on what he is assigned. One of the ET moms in our AECF group - has a son in Augusta right now for communication school. I know others that have gone to Florida for ET school, certainly Norfolk and could be California as well.

Dear J.P.'s Mom: While I can't help you on the "schools" I just wanted you to know that the places your son will go to are wonderful places. My son - must to his dismay originally - was assigned to Whidbey Island (WA) NAS. He and his wife now love the Northwest and all that it has to offer. The Seattle is a nice city and the sea & mountain views are breathtaking. It's paradise for anyone who loves the outdoors. We visited our son twice last year ... March and November. I don't like the distance ...especially now that he and his wife are expecting their first child. Last week my husband and I drove to Norfolk to be able to see our son right after his carrier qualifications; so glad we did as he shipped out yesterday on a short cruise. My son loves the beach at Norfolk and of course, he loves San Diego (tries to get a game in at PetCo Park when he's there and the teams in town). Both Norfolk and SanDiego have great restaurants and beaches.

Mary Proud Mom of Nick: Chris will be participating in RIMPAC. http://www.starbulletin.com/news/20100504_14_countries_34_ships_boo.... The Stennis has participated in the past. Maybe our boys will literally be "ships passing in the night."

Carolyn, is her C school in Norfolk? What rate is your daughter?

Sailordawgmom -- Nick has interviewed in front of one board on a different ship and with his direct CO. Applications packages are due in July1st and then in November he will find out if he makes it. It seems very common to take a few attempts at this - they only accept about 200 applicants each year. He is getting a lot of great support from the officers on his ship encouraging him to go forward. It's a lengthy process for the Seaman to Admiral program aka as STA-21.

DianeR...sounds like Chris is off to a great start -- what a nice play to go for his first underway!

Carolyn --- yes, lots of hotels around any military base can be...yes, try the Navy Lodge! Clean and safe.

A lot of A schools will not allow students to have cars now. Our son is an FC and was in GL for A school for a year and initially they allowed the students to have cars due to the length of their schools - now I understand they only authorize them for those that are married and living off base. How long is her A school Carolyn?

Thanks, everyone for the congratulations. He's had so many ups and downs during the almost 5 years to get here. He is so excited.

Sailordawg: How's Kyle doing? Has he started flying yet? Let's get together soon at TDG.

Mary H in GA/Kim: My son and his wife love WA. They're at Whidbey Island NAS north of Bremerton. He did two carrier quals on the Stennis. The weather is so much cooler than GA. We went to visit the kids in March and November last year and loved the rain and cold...so refreshing. Views around Puget Sound are spectacular.

Caroline: This was our first visit to Norfolk so I don't what's the best value. If the base lodgings aren't full (which they were when we drove down), they're a great value. Your daughter can make the reservations for you. We were in the Boston area visiting family when our son's end of carrier quals and our driving back home aligned...we drove 12 hours and got to have dinner with him, meet some of the other pilots and then left about 8:30p. They all had to head back to their hotel to get up early and fly back to WA. Maybe Nick and Chris will (unknowingly) cross paths!

Have a great day... keep cool!

Mary, Proud Mom of Nick. So, Chris successfully finished his quals last Tuesday. He leaves this coming Tuesday on his first mini cruise ... to Hawaii aboard the Ronald Reagan.

Carolyn, I went with a friend last year to Norfolk to attend a homecoming for her son and we stayed at the Navy Lodge. I would definitely recommend it, recently remodeled - it was equivalent to any Holiday Inn, etc and had a minimart in the lobby and the base was just down the street. It was a nice + clean facility, it also had a little mini kitchette.

Good morning Ladies! Kim so good so see you :-)

MaryH, Washington State is truly a beautiful state, your kids will get a great opportunity to see the Pacific Northwest.

Arlene40, you have so many grandchildren to be proud of, glad that your grandson is coming home soon and again at Christmas - something more to look forward to!
Carolyn, it is our first deployment for our son. I just sealed up his first "care" package. We were enjoying our coffee out on the deck yesterday and about 8 am our phone rang and in my mind I said...the only one that might call THAT early is Nick. Ran to the phone and it was our sailor!!! Calling from the middle of the ocean from the ship's phone!! It was so exciting - our first call from the ship. A slight delay and a little echo but it was wonderful to hear from him. They've been gone about 10 days and made a quick stop in Guam and Nick had duty that day. I might handle deployments better than some as I was a Navy wife for over 10 years and spent many deployments waiting for a letter to arrive. Now we have email, ship phones and skype and our ship started a facebook page and they are wonderful about posting updates and photos. Seen a photo of our son today - he was playing BINGO on Saturday night!! So the distance is hard but the communications certainly make things so much better.
