Questions are always welcome here!
You will NOT see your new sailors on Thursday - your first galance at them is when those doors roll open at PIR on Friday morning. Most of the PIR groups, organize an informal dinner or gathering on Thursday evenings because they have met on Navy4Moms and developed their own group for their recruits and are anxious to meet one another by the time the PIR comes around.

No sailors will leave before graduation, some will be grad 'n go and leave sometime that day, others won't leave until days or weeks later and some stay in Great Lakes for school. It really varies depending on where they are going and if the school is ready for them to report.

When our son did his PIR, this site was relatively new and I planned a dinner for those graduating the same day. It really snowballed into a nice event, we had about 50 for dinner and the administators for this site came to GL and had dinner with us but more importantly we did a webcam from the restaurant so all of the moms back on the site could meet us and see what was going on. It was the first organized event and they have just continued every week since then.

So --- if your group is planning a dinner, go and enjoy yourselves on Thursday evening. You won't see your sailor that night and you will find some of those families will be good friends for a long time to come. Many of the moms from our PIR days are still very closely connected.

Good morning to all the fabulous GA ladies! So much activity here - I love it.

GoldenEmily === The Navy will tell you to purchase refundable airline tickets which really would gouge your wallet but the bottomline is once you have his graduation date he SHOULD graduate that day. However - until the moment that they pass battlestations - there are things that can hold up their graduation. So if you wait until the last minute, airline prices will only go higher. At some point you just have to have faith and roll the dice. You can check airline tickets both refundable and non refundable fares and you will see a huge difference in cost...most airlines will allow you to do a change fee if necessary (about $150) and we found it would be cheaper to do that then buy the refundable tickets. My friend Molly thought her son was graduating on Oct 16th but just got word last night that he is in the Oct 9th PIR group ---- I'm sure you will meet her at the PIR dinner.

Hotels...you can book now, they have a very accomodating cancellation policy. When my nephew did his PIR, my sister drove from MI to great Lakes and found that her son was grad 'n go and she hated her hotel so decided not to stay any longer than the first night. She went back to the hotel after PIR and said...what if we cancel the rest of our week? They said -- as long as she was out of the room by noon, no cancellation fees. The hotels in the area are very Navy oriented, so book your hotel with peace of mind and maybe start watching for airfare sales.

So glad to hear you got a phone call Alli - doesn't that feel great?! I agree with Mary H...they sound different and it's good stuff!

Wanda - wish you would have joined us for the picnic...it would have helped your blues! I'm starting to feel my set in a little bit already, daughter left to return to college yesterday, hubby out of town and I get to take Nick to the airport in the morning...all by myself! And the house will be empty with our kids gone... trying to be a big girl here!!!

Margie - my computer has been acting bad lately too!

barbara J. one of these gatherings...we are going to get you to join us!!!

Jean, I know how much you treasure your son's leave. Wow a nine year engagement! I can only hope, we have not discussed a wedding date (yet) Ashleigh needs to finish college and her fiance' will be heading to Iraq for a year in October.

Thank you all for your congrats on the engagement and your wonderful thoughts on Nick. We truly have been blessed with two great kids.

Congratulations, Mary. It couldn't happen to a better mother-in-law to be. Again, thanks for all your work in putting the picnic together!

Thank you all, we truly enjoyed the day and meeting so many new families. Okay...must say the Navy4Moms cake was BREAKFAST for a few folks in my house! Nick said something about eggs, milk, etc! Definitely lets think of a fall gathering.

Runner Angel, your son will be coming home about the time our SIL to be is heading to Iraq...sigh. We will look forward to meeting you!

Margaret - GL to your son as he starts his classes, so much better to be in school than sitting on hold.

Peri - we miss you girl! Denise and Mark joined us...we'll do lunch soon. The ring is quite gorgeous, when Army boy arrived from the airport yesterday Ashleigh was not home from school and he was so anxious and proud to show us the ring. So when she called to tell us --- she is engaged, I had the pleasure of saying...I seen the ring first!

It's official - daughter is engaged! We haven't seen her yet, they packed a picnic and went to Look Out Mountain in Tennessee and apparently Nick2 proposed under the waterfall. He wanted it to be very romantic - apparently mission accomplished

Welcome Margaret! We know you are still glowing over that PIR...it stays with you for a long time! What school is your son in at GL? Our son is an FC...he spent a lot of time in GL but recently graduated from his C school and will be reporting to his first ship soon ...too soon!

Tanya, I know Canton well :-)

Good morning ladies, what a wonderful Saturday meeting so many of you and your families yesterday. Good people, good food and good weather! Margie made the cutest cupcakes - they had anchors on them or Navy written in navy blue! I'd love to ask Diane for the recipe for those Heath bars - but we enjoyed them so much it would be dangerous if we knew how to make them! I heard later in the day that my son sang the words to Captain Jack!! I know when Irene gets a chance she will be sharing the photos.

I seen our daughter's engagement ring last night...wow. The proposal is taking place today.

We agree with Alli! Paul and I just want to thank everyone that participated in this afternoons festivities, celebrating our children, this support system, and each other! We look forward to the next one.

So sorry Diane, no one is ignorant here! A person that enlists in the Navy under the delayed entry program is referred to as a "depper" as the program is called DEP. A person can be in the DEP program up to 12 months before reporting to boot camp.

OK, Mary, I'll show my ignorance here. What's a "depper"?
