Hi.  I'm a new Navy mom and of course by extension, new to this site.  My 19 year old son is not scheduled to leave for bootcamp until December 26th. I know I will get all of the vocabulary wrong but I know that he signed up to be a yeoman.  Because he is a certified scuba diver and desires to do something with the navy diver programs, he is working with his recruiter to try to go early.  I am excited about his passion for the navy and very proud of  his choice, but as his mom, I do have concerns for his safety.  I am encouraged already for the support I see here with other Navy moms and I welcome any advice as ya'll see the need.  :)

Welcome to the Group camcgehee!  My son has been in for a little over two years now.  After he leaves for boot, you will receive a letter informing you of his graduation date and address.  Start writing as soon as you get that address!  All of the letters and cards go a long way to these Recruits.  My son's lenght of time was only 7 weeks because they pushed his class ahead to fill up some spots.  Normally though boocamp is 8 weeks.  What job (rate) will your son be training for after bootcamp?  My son is a Corpsman and spent 14 weeks in Great Lakes after bootcamp going through A School.  That school is now in Texas though and I hear they ship them out soon after PIR is over.

Welcome camcqehee. I will try and answer your question. Defintely anticipate graduation!!!!! He will call you when he gets there for about 2 seconds and say I am here. (LOL) That is all they are allowed. You will receive his clothing back in a couple of weeks. As far as travel, you will receive all that info as to the date and will have time to make plans. As far as how long you will have with him depends on his unit. When I went which has been several years ago, we got to spend time with him that day, but he had to be back that evening. We got to pick him up the following mornign and spend time with him. Do not send cell phone, you will get it back. If there is anything I can help with, please let me know. Again, welcome!!!!!

My son leaves August 8, 2012 for Great Lakes, Ill. Can anyone tell me if I should anticipate graduation, and make travel arrangements early, or wait? Will he get a whole weekend or just a few hours? I cant miss his graduation, so I wanna be ready!!

KelleyM... So glad you joined. Our son has finally made it to San Antonio. He is excited to be out of GL and back to some more predictable weather. He said it felt good to be warm again.  It has been a long 8 months. We are only about 10 miles away from each other. We need to have lunch one day.
