Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

**UPDATE 4/26/2022** Effective with the May 6, 2022 PIR 4 guests will be allowed. Still must be fully vaccinated to attend.
**UPDATE as of 11/10/2022 PIR vaccination is no longer required.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Suffolk is a really nice place to live and it's not that far from Norfolk. Definitely check out the website apartments.com so you can get an idea for prices. Check out local real estate agents and see if they also do rental properties. I hope that helps. :)

My daughter and her husband live in Portsmouth and it's not as bad as everyone says. If he is stationed in Norfolk - there is a website that is specifically for military housig - it gives you a list of the apartments, townhomes, etc in the general area that give military discount. Google military housing, Norfolk, VA and it should come up. Apartments.com and Rent.com all have listings for that are that offer military discounts as well.

They just had a huge discussion about this on the Norfolk page that's on here. Check that out, there were a ton of suggestions. As for Norfolk itself, I wouldn't want to live there unless it was the Ghent area. But that's my personal opinion. Some of the places by ODU aren't terrible. But for the most part, the area right around base is kind of sketchy.

If I were you I would look for gated apartments. It costs a little more than the apartment complexes that aren't but I think the price is worth it. I live in VA with my family so I am familiar with the area and I, also, am in your situation cause Im moving there when my fiance comes home from deployment. We are debating on base housing cause its safer but if you don't have time for the wait list seriously look for a gated neighborhood apartment complex. Also, I wouldn't stray too far away from Norfolk into Suffolk and Newport News etc cause the traffic is awful for your man trying to get to the Norfolk base in mornings and evenings. It can be up to an hour wait (sometimes longer or shorter) on I-64 E near the tunnel that he will have to travel under everyday. Good luck!

Thanks so much! Our biggest concern is the traffic going into the base in the morning. He doesn't want to have to wake up two hours early just to get to work, but if we don't find anything in Norfolk, we will start looking in other cities. When I was there back in May, I actually got lost and got stuck in base traffic for an hour and 15 minutes and it was awful. Does anybody know how the traffic is in the morning coming from Hampton or any where else for that matter?

Traffic in that area is in general pretty awful. My suggestion is to live as close to base as possible if your uncomfortable with the traffic. Road work is ALWAYS happening and it seems like it's a daily occurrence that there is a car accident around the tunnel etc. Mainly the traffic going away from the tunnel on either side isn't bad but any traffic heading towards the tunnel tends to get backed up.

Thanks, traffic is going to be an issue regardless, haha. The worst part is my now boyfriend is deployed and he isn't able to help much with the search so it's all up to me. I'm not familiar with the area other than the 2 or 3 times I went to pick him up from an underway period. I've found a few really nice gated apartments that I really hope will be available by the time he comes back home.

Good! I completely understand. I have had to plan my entire wedding and figure out living situation alone while my fiance is deployed right now as well. It sucks but hopefully they will appreciate all of our hard work when they get back! :)

We live in Hampton, and my husband leaves at 5:30am and is on base and parked by 6:30. Getting from Hampton to base in the morning is fin, but you do hit traffic at the gates. Even if you live in Norfolk, he's going to want to leave the house an hour and a half early because traffic at the gates is that bad. Traffic on the way back to this side of the water can get a little crazy, but its doable. If you can't find anything safe and affordable in Norfolk, I would recommend living in Hampton. Plus, its a little cheaper then Norfolk because we don't have the base and the college right here.

I really like Hampton and have noticed is much cheaper than Norfolk. If we can't find anything there then we will definitely be moving to Hampton, lol.
