Hi guys! I'm new to the site and military life in general. My longtime boyfriend left for bootcamp 3 weeks ago, and it seems like he is doing really great in some aspects. He came in first on his physical fitness test and is division leader, and he says bootcamp is really easy! He is just taking being apart from me (and our dog) really really hard. I keep trying to encourage him and be really positive, and I'm writing to him as much as possible. Any other words of advice? I'm hoping as time goes on it will get easier, but after boot he will be in A-School at Great Lakes for another year+, so realistically the separation isn't going away any time soon. Thanks everyone!

Being  homesick early in boot camp is very common.  He should perk up soon, three weeks is when the divisions start acting as a unit and succeeding together.  It really helps them feel motivated and good about what they are doing.

Keep writing letters, have the dog write letters too.  Tell him to hang in there, it gets better.

You will  have much more contact during A school, and if he is there that long, he can come home over the Christmas holidays.

Thank you! Our pup sent a card today :) I guess I wasn't expecting him to take it so hard … we're both 27, been away for college, have lived on our own before, so this definitely isn't the normal "first time away" like many other sailors. But, good to know I mean so much to him that he's missing me so much I suppose. I'll just keep up the support and know he'll be fine! Thanks Anti M!

Sounds pretty much the same thing that my husband and I went through!  We are older as well, both have already gone to college, and bootcamp was hard for us just because we missed each other!  My husband said it was way easy as well, and that for the most part it was super boring and a waste of time...luckily its over in a flash and before you know it you will be together again!  Feel free to write me if you have any questions or anything and good luck to you both!

Thanks so much for the reply!! It made me smile :) 31 days til graduation and he sounds like he is doing a little better already. Appreciate the support! Hope you and yours are well!

Hi my boyfriend recently left for boot camp on 6/24 so i understand what you are going through at this moment. im just ready to get some letters and at least a phone call from him sometime soon. I have already written 2 letters so far, most likely i probably will be writing letters daily because it kind of makes me feel like im talking to him. But just hang in there, just look at it like this everyday he is one step closer to graduation and you having an opportunity to see him. and also being that he is going to remain in A school in GL you can spend the weekend with him! so that's a plus for you and him! pray the best for you two and your journey! God Bless you and your future sailor!

Hi Christine! How are you holding up? I think the first week was the strangest!! The shocking part was just when I found out how much harder my boyfriend is taking it than I am, because I was the super emotional one leading up to him leaving, haha. It takes a little while for a phone call but hopefully soon you'll get one soon if you haven't already! Keep writing as much as you can. It's great for both of you! I don't get to it every single day but I try my hardest. Thanks for your kind words!! Keep in touch and stay strong :)
