Hey so I havent ever been to one but my understanding is its like prom. Very formal, women wear formal prom type dresses and the guys were their formal uniforms.. there is music and i think sometimes food.. but like i said im not totally sure i just know its super formal like prom is :)

I went to a military ball with a friend who was in the army, and it was very formal. I wore a long simple dress and heels. Everything is very formal (especially for a girl who isn't use to formal settings). He walked me in and had to introduce me to his commanding officers, and there were speeches and music. Mostly a lot of formalities. I've heard some of them have dancing, though the one I was at did not.

It is a VERY formal event!  Long gowns are worn, tea lenght is not worn to something like this.  If you don't have anything or can't borrow anything for this event...go to the thrift stores and look for a long gown.

It is NOT like a prom.

It is very professional atmosphere, you don't just walk up to people and start talking to them unless you know them.  You wait to be introduced to the senior people.

There is sometimes dancing at some of these events..but is is after all the formal part is done.  Also some don't have dancing, but they sometimes have an after party somewhere else...but you have to be invited to the after party.  Most after parties I have ben to where for E7 and up though...I am sure the jr people went to some other type of after part somewhere also.

It normally starts with a cocktail hour...where their are drinks and app's.  Than it goes to a formal dinner, during the dinner their are toasts (that are preset who will say what...do NOT try and do a toast)  You will do a lot of standing up for the toasts and prayers and entrance of the Flag.  There will be a POW/MIA cermony, the most senior person in attendance will give a speech.  More speeches....more speeches...more toasts...you will be served food in between at set times.

After dinner there may or may not be dancing.
