Hello ladies. So I am really stressed and confused at the moment. My sailor and I got married after his A-school and then he immediately flew to his ship which is on deployment. He will be gone for a few more months as they are on the home stretch of their deployment. He will be stationed in Norfolk and since he flew immediately to his ship he obviously doesn't have anything set up there. So I guess my question is when can he get BAH started? When we got my military id and all of that we had to do it at an Air force base as we aren't near any navy bases. I keep asking my husband when we can sign up for BAH and he said he doesn't think we can get BAH started until he gets back to Norfolk after deployment. Is this true?

As soon as he gets back from deployment (depending if he gets 1st pom or 2nd pom) he plans on taking ten days leave that he has and moving his clothes and things as well as mine. But I am not sure if this will be possible if we haven't gotten any housing allowance to be able to pay for first months rent. I realize that the Navy won't pay for the move since we got married after he already got his orders.

Tell him to go talk to admin on his ship. They can set up his BAH there he doesn't have to wait until he comes home. You are correct that the Navy won't pay to move you to Norfolk but you should be receiving BAH while he's deployed, as well as family separation pay. Your first BAH should be retroactive from when you got married. He'll probably need a copy of your marriage license, his updated page 2 & possibly some info from you about where you're living (like utility bills with your name & address, etc) but it can be take care of on the ship. He can go to his division head for help or straight to admin; regardless he should be bugging people until someone gets it done.

Thank you so much for your reply. I'm honestly so pissed off right now that every time I ask about BAH he says we have to wait. I would be so less stressed if we were signed up to get bah because then I wouldn't have to worry about when we can move into an apartment and be able to afford rent for the first month. I will email him and let him know he can set it up on the ship.

You're welcome. If he just got to the ship he may not feel like it's something he can ask someone but this is an issue that can most certainly be taken care of on the ship and one that they should take care of immediately for you. It's really simple to take care, of he just needs to ask. I hope he gets it worked out for you because you're absolutely right. With the Navy not paying for your move it will be expensive so you can definitely be putting this money away to save for your move!

Hey! Any updates? Was he able to get it figured out?

Yes! He got it taken care of and said that BAH says pending and that it should be on the next check. Thank goodness!

Just like abuon said you definitely get it from the date you are married. My husband tried to pull this sometimes... mostly because he was tired of asking people to help him and getting turned down or told the wrong information... finally I text him (he was at his duty station but not deployed yet while I was at home) a list of questions, and I said (somewhat jokingly, sortttt of not.) "don't call me until you get the answers to my questions, I don't care who you have to corner in their office." sure enough he called me a few hours earlier and had all the answer to my questions and the information I needed lol. He had to go in with the questions written down and ask down the list. He had to actually tell the chief he wasn't leaving until he helped him figure out the answers or took him to the people that could answer them. but yes, yall get BAH. Its simple really he just needs to go to admin and add you to his page two. They might ask where you are living right now but that's doubtful. They should give you the BAH for where his duty station is. I would explain it to him like this... we are losing $1500 a month by you not going down and filling out paperwork that will take 5 minutes to complete. lol

Haha! Totally just about what i said to my husband I was like " you are figuring this out, and you are figuring this out now" needless to say he emailed me the next day and said it was taken care of!

haha good for you! Boys -_- sometimes you have to tell them what they ARE going to do. lol! They would rather not deal with it. but stuff like that we cant take care of for them. lol I am glad to hear he got it figured out!
