Have him call his command, and ask if someone there (his chief or sponsor) can call the car company and read them the Sailors and Soldiers Relief Act. Maybe what they're doing is legal, but maybe if his command breathes down they will be more helpful.
So, I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this, and/or knows how to deal with it. My husband was scheduled to change duty stations from Great Lakes to San Diego on this past monday. Due to weather they, shut down base and wouldn't let anyone leave (even though their flights were't canceled) Now, they're saying they're so backed up because they have to re book all of the flights for about 200 people, he can't leave until NEXT friday. The issue is that all of his things are already there, including our car! And he has appointments to find us an apartment all next week. The car company is saying HE has to be the one to pick it up and if he can't sign to pick up the car, they have to impound it until he can get there.
My husband is aviation and is stationed at an Air Force Base in Oklahoma. There are also Sailors at an Air Force Base in Nebraska. HM "A" School is in Texas as in MA "A" School. CS "A" School is at an Army Base in Virginia. Sailors train and are stationed in so many different and diverse places.
The Navy has inland air bases, such as China Lake, CA (no water) and Fallon, NV. Also some communications bases are inland, and you rarely hear about them, as well as Navy detachments on bases of other branches. So while the big bases are on a coast, not all of them are.
One thing to research while looking at ratings (jobs), is the advancement opportunities. Some ratings are in high demand, so the prospects for advancing later are very slim even if the recruit snags a spot initially.
Also KJ05 - I send several letters in one envelope. As long as there are no pictures they won't have to open them in front of RDC. I sent him some manila envelopes, to be able to mail home letters in case space was an issue. I knew he would have to open that in front of RDC, so I didn't include a letter in with them.
Do you mean he's taking the ASVAB? Once he does that, he'll go through MEPS. Have his physical and choose his job and all. Then, he'll go into the Delayed Entry Program. (DEP) The amount of time he spends there will depend on his job. For us it took about a year from the time he took the ASVAB to the day he left. (ASVAB in Feb 2014; shipped Jan 2015) I think the average wait time is 6 months to a year for most jobs right now.
