Once you meet a recruiter, how long until you go and take all your tests and get your physical? And then, how long until bootcamp? My husband is going to talk to a recruiter soon and I'm just wondering the timeline on everything. Thanks in advance!
Great reply, Lizzie.
I'd add Trust as a huge factor too. If he cannot call, you trust that it is for a valid reason, not because his love has faltered. You trust him to be a professional around female sailors and during long absences.
How long you are apart has no set numbers, it varies for different communities (air, sub, surface, intel), different ratings, even different sailors. Boot camp is always two months, unless he's there for Christmas, that extends training a week. A school and possibly C school depend on what rating he contracts for. Nukes and AECF and some aviation ratings can spend nearly two years in training. You can move to be near him in that case. Anything under six months (individually, A and C schools orders are separate things), means no paid move to the area, and he must live in the barracks. You can visit though, and while in school, he would get leave over Christmas. He would also get leave after A school, a week or so.
In the fleet ... while there are exceptions (HM and some intel ratings), a Navy enlistment almost always begins with sea duty. The ship/sub/squadron will have a homeport, and while they are there the job is pretty normal, plus a duty day now and then. Deployments are supposed to happen every 18 months or so, but sometimes they happen at a faster tempo. A six month deployment can turn into 8 or 10 months. It happens, you simply learn to be flexible, tough, and build a great support system. You WILL be apart, but not for his entire enlistment.
He must be within weight standards and should be able to pass his PFA before he ships. Passing his first PFA in boot camp opens the door for early advancement to E-2.
Hi Lisa,
This website has some information about what they will experience in bootcamp, re: the physical requirements: http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/pt.asp . Bootcamp is very physically demanding, so the better shape he is in is better. Aside from their daily workouts, their punishments are physical as well.
A lot of your questions are so subjective, so the answers will change depending on each relationship, each job, etc. There are times when I can't sleep at night, when I'm lonely no matter who I'm around, when I'm angry at him because he's gone and I need him, even though I know it's not his fault. But I also feel proud of him in a way I never thought possible, I can do more on my own than I ever expected, we've learned to communicate more openly and better, overall. We look forward to little things instead of taking them for granted like we used to. The hardest part for us was his transition home after deployment.
How long they are gone for depends on his job, what he is assigned to. My husband's training, from Basic to A school to C school was almost exactly 2 years until he finally was assigned to his first ship. Since you are already married, you may be able to go with him for his A or C school orders depending on how long his training is. My husband's first deployment was 10 months. The ship that relieved him was 6 months. He hit port every so often so we could skype or talk on the phone, but we were also able to email and Facebook message almost daily except for a few times that communications were turned off. We were also able to send mail (both ways - he can send mail too), and I had so much fun putting together care packages to send him. It's exciting to get mail from them, something you can hold onto and read over and over.
Hi everyone! My husband is highly considering joining the Navy. He said it's his dream, and I want to support him in this decision. I just have a few questions.Thank you so much for your help!
- How does it effect your marriage and home life?
- How long are they usually gone for?
- How do you communicate with your loved one when they are gone (email, phone, texts, etc)?
- How much in shape do you recommend for him to be before he signs up and goes to bootcamp?
Lizzie_corpsmanwife, I seen your post from a few days back about move.mil but I've checked it out and for the navy it says in order to utilize the site for the navy it says this "If you are moving personal property as "next of kin" or are a Summary Courts Officer." Thoughts? :/
