Hello everyone, I am a Navy girlfriend, and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for what I can do when I go visit my sailor this Saturday in Groton, I have heard there's really not much to do in Groton but if anyone has any ideas that would be awesome. Also, if anyone has any recommendations for good restaurants in the area that would be really appreciated too. Thank you! :)

Hi! We just went to visit our son in Groton. Go to Mystic! There is so much to do there. It is only 10 to 15 minutes away. The best place to eat in Groton is Paul's Pasta. It is all home made and oh so good! Have a great trip.

On another note we have a facebook page for Loved Ones of Groton, Ct Sailors. It has so much info and gives alot of support as well.

Thanks! Mystic is a great idea, I looked online and it looks like there are a lot of fun things to do!

Hi! My husband and I took the ferry to Block Island, RI when on vacation. It is a beautiful place! We had our bikes and rode around the island.... but there are some interesting places  to see..... If your boyfriend isn't too tired of seeing water, I would recommend it! It is a great day trip!!

Have a wonderful time with your Sailor!!!

That DOES look like a great idea, I will keep that as an idea for another time when I will be staying a bit longer, as this is my first time visiting and I will only be staying for the day and taking the amtrak down, but that is definitely a great suggestion! Thanks :)

When we were there, we went to Mystic Pizza for lunch, named for the movie, we went to the Mystic Aquarium (only missed the Kardashians by a couple of days LOL). We also visited Ye Antientist Burial Ground which is right in New Haven and is a cool OLD cemetery. If you have some time, go down Highway 95 and take a boat tour of the Thimble Islands. It's an excellent tour of homes that are built on little is,ands off the shore. Finally, don't forget to wade in the Atlantic Ocean. You don't mention where you are staying, but try to get a room at the Navy Lodge. Excellent rooms at a wonderful price with NO taxes or fees. Have a blast with your sailor!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Nancy, I think I will take your advice and head to Mystic---I went online and found out that they are having a promotion at the aquarium where sailors get in for free! :)

Just came back from my Sons  BESS Graduation. We went to the Groton Townhouse for supper. It was real nice.

One day we went to Mystic for lunch then a nice dinner at the Mohegan sun casino at Michael Jordan steak house.

Best Italian food and inexpensive Pauls pasta shop on Thames street.  Gets crowded early but you can get take out.  The portions are huge.  There is also a Navy lodge in Newport Rhode Island which is only an hour away and it is one of the most beautiful places in New England.

Mohegan Sun casino is pretty cool. Lots of restaurants and shopping inside the huge casino (also a Kids Quest where you can drop off the kids for an hourly fee while you go do whatever you want-we have one here in Michigan and it's awesome!). Good for especially if you end up in groton during rainy weather but want to get out and do something.

We didn't get over to Mystic (heard there was a lot of construction when we were there) but did find a cozy little spot on the water in Noank. Was cool to just sit there waterside and check out all the boats in the inlet.

In New London, there's the waterfront area (along river and the sound, if i remember right) with lots of little shops and restaurants. There's also a big mall in New London.

All else fails, ask the reception desk at your hotel for suggestions. They should also know if any special events are going on in any of the little towns nearby.

Have an awesome time! Don't try to do too much though. Just enjoy your time with your sailor. :)

ooppss--- I had said that Block Island is a great place to visit. Upon further investigation- I don't know if the Sailors are allowed to travel that far! So sorry...... (according to Google maps it is 58 miles--- to New London for the ferry and then out to the island)
