Hello, Everyone:

My son is currently in BC and heading out to "A" in Groton after PIR.  Any information I can get on what to expect would be wonderful.  I plan to come back and visit this group and read some earlier posts.

My son had PIR Friday and is in Groton now. If I can answer any questions I'll try.

Did you have any time with him after PIR?

Welcome MontanaMom - After P.I.R. we took our Sailor to lunch then to our hotel to relax and visit. We had to get him back on base later that afternoon. Your Sailor will be advised on what to do before P.I.R. They are to stay in uniform at all times. When you are in the hotel he can relax in casual clothes (you can bring his fav's from home). Once they step outside of the room - they must be in uniform. We did not site see that afternoon, we are so glad we decided to hang out and relax and talk with him for a few hours at our hotel. You will know by then flight time to Groton. I bought tons of his favorite snacks - we had such a big lunch he did not them at all.....I think it was nerves too! Our Sailor was off to Groton the day after P.I.R. All Groton Sailors were on a bus very, very early a.m. Once your Sailor is at the airport you can give him his cell - yay! Our Sailor did take some civilian clothes with him but he did not get to wear civi's for several weeks - I think it is w/yellow card. After your Sailor checks in at airport  - if you decide to stay with him until his flight leaves  - he can get a Family pass for all of you and you can go past security gates and stay with him in airport until he leaves. You must have I.D. to do so.Your Sailor can text you while traveling and when he arrives @ Groton. It is absolutely wonderful to communicate by text, phone after BOOT! At Groton there are certain buildings, places your Sailor cannot have his phone. Your Sailor will be very busy once he arrives @ Groton. All Submariners have several qualifications to meet (earn). The sooner he meets his qualifications the sooner he earns privileges. A white card privilege to a yellow card to a blue card. He will have lots of cleaning duty, he will be assigned to watch plenty to do! There may be quite a while before the start of A School. They have several mandatory courses to complete first. ALL good!! These courses are extremely important to safety of ALL our submariners. Our son is very happy at Groton. A totally different environment than BOOT. Our Sailor has mentioned that he appreciates the accountability Groton expects. Privileges are earned here at Groton.  Please join our group - GROTON, CT. SUBSCHOOL & "A" SCHOOL MOMS - This group of lovely NAVY mom's have helped me with tons of information and a beautiful support team! We are here for you!  Hooyah!

Thank you FATHOMOM.  I really appreciate your answers.  We didn't know when to expect him to fly out so we are staying over until Monday. I will go through and find some clothes to take with me in my bag along with his cell phone. He did ask for his cell phone. I will quite worrying about what to do with him and just plan a relaxing day to spend with him.  I think my son will appreciate the accountability as well.  He wrote his brothers not long ago and told them the sooner they learn discipline and respect the easier life will be.  He was so excited about his schooling prior to leaving to go to Boot Camp.  I'm excited to see what he thinks when he gets there.  Again thank you for the information.  You will be seeing me in the Group GROTON, CT SUBSCHOOL & "A" SCHOOL MOMS

How's your boy doing Fathomom? Mine is hoping to phase up after Tuesday when he takes his test. Has all his quals done for yellow, just needs the test. Ask him if he has met Admiral Whiskers! I'm glad he likes Groton. BTW, at the galley on M, W & F is BBQ pit  during lunch; hamburgers, hot dogs and other bbq favorites. Let him know if he doesn't already!

which airport did they fly out of in Chicago.  I have seen that some sailors get on bus as early as 1 am

Fathomom covered it very well. This begins my son's 4th week in Groton, he PIR'd 8/2. First week was build while they waited for more to flll a class, 2nd week was indoc, and he started Sub School last Monday, says it is "cool". If you want any info on the area, it is my hometown so I can answer any questions about Groton and surrounding areas if you want.

Are you going to Sarge's meet and greet? When is PIR? I suggest the meet and greet, lots of fun and very informative. Also, Lovell's Steak House for lunch or dinner is delicious! It is in Lake Forest.

Annette - Happy to hear about your son. By now I am  sure he has taken his test and has his yellow card! Now on to the next card! ALL good. Our son is doing very well, thank you. He has classed up with ATT. It is a self paced course. My prayers are that he focuses and get's on with the study time! With this course NAVY offers night study. So our son's have plenty of opportunity to spend a little more time to do their very best with their courses. Toooo funny! Our Sailor totally new who Admiral Whiskers was. He also mentioned that once he arrived at Groton he ate BBQ way toooo much - now he will enjoy BBQ once or twice a week. My brother owns a Southern BBQ Catering Co. here in So. Cal., our son said Groton NAVY BBQ it is good, but just not like his Uncle's.Yay! Well, my husband and I will be road tripping to Groton soon. You mentioned Groton is your home town - it sounds beautiful. We have decided to stay at a local hotel rather than on base. It will give our son a chance to come on out and stay with us. A small change of scenery. I have been searching on line for local hotels as close to the base as possible. Do you have any recommendations? Our son has plans to take us places - anywhere is fine with us, we are just looking forward to seeing our son!

MontanaMomShip - How are things going with your son in Groton? How are YOU!!?
