Hey everyone,

I am very new to this and pretty confused. I don't know what my sons rank is or will be that is all over my head. He is at basic right now and is going into his fourth week. They first told him he would go to Groton for his "A" school then they told him he would stay in IL..He is going for Machinist Mate on the sub, so I guess my questions are which school is first and usually how long are they? Thank you for any help..

My son is a MM on a sub currently. Your son will go straight to Groton CT for Sub School. After BESS he will go to his new duty station. My son was told the same thing about IL but he went on to CT. My son is currently underway, his first and he is hoping to get his fish before they get back to port. Congratulations Navy Mom, glad to have your son a part of the Silent Service after Groton

one more question, did you get to spend anytime with him after basic graduation or did they send him straight to CT. thanks for the info..

My son graduated boot camp 10/5/2012, and we got to spend that day and the next with him. We thought he would be sent straight to CT the following day so we already had plans to return home. (We also were told he'd go to CT, then return to IL; seems recruiters tell them one thing, boot camp tells them another, then they are told something else with their different schoolings. :) ) He didn't get sent to CT for another 10 days, then he didn't start BESS until after Christmas. He graduated BESS on 2/22 and now has 3 weeks of BMS, then A school for ?? months - all in Groton. Then he will be stationed somewhere. He also is going to be a MM on a sub.

sdees3, where is your son stationed?

sdee3, did your son do A School after BESS?  My son is also MM and was told he would have A School after BESS.  I don't like knowing whats going on but guess that is part of life now.

BESS is first, then A school, and/or tech school, and all in Groton these days. They may have a wait classing up say from sub school to A school. They get duties and such to do while they wait, don't stay completely idle. My son arrived on August 3, day after PIR, and had some indoctrination stuff, started BESS 2 days ago. His cousin lives just up the road from base, and is active military himself, so he went and picked him up Sunday and brought him home for a nice home cooked meal and visit last Sunday.

OK, I should have looked at the date, that is an old post and you are old hat at this by now! ;)
