Cheri - I believe the shuttle goes to Providence, Hartford & Boston as those are the airports my grandson told us to book from.  I know Providence for sure as that is where he is flying out of and he will be taking the shuttle to get there.

He has a baby (8 months)daughter so he gets to spend her first Christmas with her

I am so very excited just learned that my grandson will be home on Dec 17th for two weeks..  We have not seen him since PIR in early May.

No, but my son says that he is not coming home for Christmas because he doesn't want to go in the hole with his leave. I really hope he changes his mind because I miss him so much!

Thanks for all the information everyone!  It all helps so much!  I was nervous for my son when he told me about how hard it it but he has a good head on his shoulders.  He said "well, mom, I just have to really buckle down and do what I need to do" and, so far, he doesn't seem to worried about it.  Also, he seems to have a great group of guys who all came from bootcamp together who seem very serious about school and get along well together.  Thanks again everyone!

I had a great visit this weekend on the Sub Base visiting my son. The base essentially sits on the side of a mountain & down to the river, with another mountain on the other side.  So it's no wonder that the phone service is spotty.

We saw as much of the base as we were able to access while we were there.  It was nice to see it in person and get a better understanding of what / where he was when talking to him.

Diana, his "quals" usually means that he has to complete some basic tasks to get from a white card to a yellow card and then ultimately to a blue card.  Each card brings more liberty and more responsibility.  My son has been there just over a month and now has his yellow card.

While on a white card, they can't wear civilian clothes, their off base time is limited, they have to return to their dorm earlier, and they don't have watch duty.

I've also learned that they can be "bumped" back for misbehavior.  My son says that quite a few get bumped back to white cards.

Our drive was about 7 hours one way, with stops & a meal.  We stayed at The Navy Lodge.  And we will likely be going back up for Thanksgiving. I hope!!

My son had ATT & could text fine but talking was a big problem in the dorm room.  The sub school is hard but not impossible.  He had a good group & graduated with little problems.

I thought my son started his BESS classes on the 31st but he was apparently taking a different class as well as getting his qualifications (?) done.  He starts BESS class today.  He said he had heard that 40-60% of the guys doing into subs either end up deciding subs are not for them or for some other reason decide to go into something else in the navy.  He (and I) are kinda worried but I believe everything happens for a reason and that whatever path GOD wants him to take will be what happens.

Joan - my son has ATT.  His phone service is not so great - outside better than inside for sure.  Texting is no problem, email is fine, but voice is often problematic.  We still manage to talk to him quite often though, so I wouldn't worry about that too much.

Tackyjacky - congrats to your son!  Wishing the best for him and you as well.  :-)
