My son just was assigned to Norfolk. I was hoping for Ba Nfld as San Diego seems to be popular. Interesting that it went as a third choice.

My son told me he was assigned to Norfolk for the entire four years. Bummer. It's just so expensive to make the trip out to see him. At least the Navy Lodge is a deal. I checked out the price of rooms on Nantucket Island as I have always wanted to go there. the rooms started at $400 a night and went up from there. Looks like a day trip. :-)

So far my son is assigned to the USS Minnesota.  Things could change though.

My son put down Groton as his first choice, Norfolk as his second & Kings Bay as his third choice.  He got Norfolk.  We are grateful he is on the East Coast at least!  He will be back in Groton after qualifications for more training while waiting for his sub to be built.  Nothing is certain with the Navy!

Val - maybe the trick it to put your first choice as your third choice  haha........My grandson is in Groton (since early May) and we are hoping, that he gets stationed in San Diego since we live in Arizona and it in only a 6 hour drive from here

So this brings up a question, once they are assigned a sub do they stay with that sub for there entire time in the Navy.  And since that sub is attached to a base like your son on the USS Helena in San Diego will that always be there base.  Something that just crossed my mind and wondering if that is how it works

danagirl - Caution your son about most submariners getting their requested duty station.  My son just called from Groton and he finally got his orders.  He put down Groton, Norfolk and San Diego as his third choice as he has heard that few were being sent there.  He was hoping for east coast.  He got his third choice and will be going to San Diego and on the USS Helena.  He is glad to finally know what he is doing but he said that several of his friends all got their third choice.   Others would have preferred San Diego but are staying in Groton..  He is content and is now looking at all the interesting opportunities he will have out on the west coast.    We are all learning to this - much patience and flexibility and always to sound positive and encouraging for them.     Being on hold between each place and all the delays was something we were not prepared for - now we just assume it will happen.    Much has changed since my son left for bootcamp one year ago.

Proud Navy Mom: I too am a planner and it can be very frustrating, after being a military wife for 14 years you think I would be more in tune with how it works. My son was supposed to go this weekend to CT for his sub school and they have told him he is on hold. He is so disappointed as he was ready to be a sub man! He is hoping next week. The longer it takes to get him there though the longer it will be before he comes home :(  He is very excited that most submariners get their requested duty station since they are limited as where they can go, so he does have a positive outlook on it! I appreciate all the info everyone gives makes it easier on us :)

I was thinking about it after I placed my post yesterday. My son did not get leave until he was finished with TCNO and hadn't started A school. He was able to come home during that little break in classes.

Oh Cheri, good to know as we are flying into Boston and I was wondering if I had totally blown it. Sounds like everyone flies into Hartford or New Haven. We are flying out of San Francisco and that was a direct flight. What did you think about driving out of Boston? I have heard that it is difficult so I am a little apprehensive; and how long was the drive.

My son planned a surprise trip home between ATT & TCNO schools; he was denied leave.  Thank God I didn't find out about it until about 3 weeks later!  I'm starting to wonder what the criteria is for a visit home.  Personally, I'd rather see him at Christmas.  I'll have to share him with more people but he'll get the opportunity to see more family during that time.  Can't wait!!!!!!!!
