Thank you all for your discussion about the "escape" training.  When I think that I worried myself almost to the point of illness over the gas chamber at boot I know for a fact that I won't be reading anything about any of the escape training.  I'm much better off not knowing until after it's over.  I have a general idea of what they have to do and that's already more than I want to know!!!  It's nice to come to a site where you have support and can talk about things like this.  Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!!!

Rose 7: I agree with you. I want my Sailor prepared and confidently trained for any and all Navy situations. For me, I like the fact that my Sailor is exposed to these extreme situations. He can only grow stronger from the experience. The important thing (to me) is that he knows that he has learned the skills to survive.

My Sailor said the escape training was easy. He said the test to repair the water leaks was tough. The more they practice, the better adapt they will be to handle the situation.

My son interview take place at the end of TECNO (sp?).  They show up in my house and interview me and my son, not my husband.  They also did friends and teachers.

About the Escape Training, I don't know if my son did it or not.  When I talk to my son I always ask how is school and that it.  I prefer not to know too much and I know he knows that I will be worry.  But after reading all....may be I'm weird....but I'm glad that they have the opportunity to practice all this now even that sound a little scary than not and happen for real.

I asked my son about the escape training today and he says it is not mandatory to graduate and that he was not able to do it because he had a cold and "his ears wouldn't pop." So, apparently not all of the guys do this. I found it interesting.

Welcome ssickling-unfortunately I am from CA so no help for you.

I'd suggest not reading about the escape training until AFTER your sailor has been through it. Though I'm not sure why it bothers me so much...my son looks forward to all of these trials and tests. I should just be happy that he gets to satisfy a bit of his adventurous soul.  :-)  I talked with my sailor this morning and he thought he might even be disqualified from the training because he is suffering from allergy symptoms. And yes...he sounded kinda bummed about that.  3 days until my road trip to Groton!!!

I don't think I should read that... I'm already worried.

my sons interview didnt take place until he was almost done with ATT. I was getting worried it was taking so long. Just glad its over . Also cjasmin...i dont think they interview spouses or fiances...although they did interview my sons GF (and they recently got engaged). BUT...i think he had her listed as 'friend' on his interview list...

I just read the escape training info. Glad my son has already done it. I gave him instructions that there were some things I was better off NOT knowing about. I know it's chicken, BUT there is nothing I could do but worry. It's OK to read in retrospect.

Martian said he was starting the submarine escape training this week. I was reading out it here: http://www.nr-1-book.com/NewFiles/EscapeTraining.html (and kinda wished I wouldn't have...)
