mark's mom it's wonderful now that you can call him, text, skype, send him goodies and personal items he's been without all this time. I'm sure he's going to feel overwhelmed come Monday but he is going to love it there! I'm excited for you!

Welcome mark's mom! Congratulations to your new Sailor HOORAH!!

My son graduated Sonar Tech Submarine A school May 8th and he traveled home the following day for two weeks leave before he was off for his permanent duty station Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. We had 14 glorious days that I continue to treasure :-) .

Nukes have a different schedule for training and leave, one of the mom's will have to jump in an provide info if your son is a nuke.

Going to graduation is going to be a personal choice. Some moms here have been to Groton more than once others like me never made it there. It just didn't fit into our schedule or budget. Fortunately there are plenty who have visited and can answer any questions you might have.

I understand you have lots of questions feel free to ask away! One of us (and sometimes more) are sure to have an answer for you :-)

Hi Cath Bubblehead mom.  Thanks for the info. It did help.  Didn't get to go to his PIR, and want to make sure to see him before he gets assigned to a Sub.

Hi Mark's Mom - most sailors that go to Groton, have several levels of schooling there - BESS, ATT, TECNO, then A school. All submariners go through BESS Basic Enlisted Submarine School. The length of time depends on their rate. I hear that they do get time between graduation and assignment, but I don't know that to be a fact.

There are graduations for BESS & A School. After BESS, they do not get leave. Hope that helps.

Hi Everyone,  I just joined the group.  My son just had his PIR 7/25/14, and arrived in Groton, CT yesterday, 7/26/14 for Sub School and A School Training.  I'm new to all of this.  Heard from him yesterday when he got there.  He's supposed to be letting his dad and I know his address and how long he's there for before graduating.  Do they get leave time before getting assigned to a Sub?

Oh LaxDogs Mom - you are so generous to share! You posted the graduation pics we have of our son from BESS monthes back. We appreciate you and your husband taking the time to do this for us. My son remembers your husband leaning in from the isle after my son accepted his certificate @ BESS - and saying "my wife is going to hugg you later, from your mom". Oh, my son smiled and it meant so much to him.....and me!! Our son's have been through quite a journey at Groton. Congratulations to ALL soon to be submariners. May God guide and bless them always.  Fair Weather and Following Seas!

NCMom - welcome to Groton. Your son will enjoy his time there. Ours did. Our son arrived in May 2013 BESS, ATT, TECHNO then completed A school May 2014 - ETNAV. Everything CathBubbhead said is what we have learned on this journey as well. Often the Sailors are put on hold for varios reasons. Often the courses are put on hold for varios reasons. So, our Sailors clean and clean some more and wait to class up.

A friend of his arrived in February, and left in May for Nuke School.

Just got back home to San Diego after spending the last four days in Groton for the A School Graduation on Thursday.  My husband took a ton of pics so I'll post them as soon as he transfers them to my computer.  He tried to get at least one of each graduating sailor.

Comment by NCMom on July 26, 2014 at 11:41pm

Can anyone give me an idea of how long A School lasts?  My sailor's PIR is 9/12/2014 and am just curious how long he'll be in Groton?  Thanks!
