Daughter will be new to Guam....looking for any info you feel is important.

My daughter has been in Guam for 2 years now.  They affectionately call it "the rock".  Guam is a US territory so she will have pretty much every thing she wants on and off base.  There is one large mall and one small mall.  Fastfood restaraunts are all over and a couple of movie theatres.  The beaches are gorgeous.  Most of them anyway.  My daughter is a Master of Arms.

The weather is hot and sticky all the time.  Then there's the rain during rainny season.  Lots of it.  There are all kinds of activities on base if she wants to get involved.  I saw 2 soccer games while I was there.  Yes it is very far away so make sure you can skype and keep in touch on facebook.  If you send her with a phone be sure it has an international plan and Guam is on it.  Verizon was ok but very spotty.  She will be better off getting a phone when she gets there and getting a local number.  The mall is the best place and the service my daughter received from this store was awesome.  Once she was settled on her own plan we put her phone on hold here in the states.  Then we just reactivate it when she comes to visit.

I went to visit my daughter this summer and while I'm glad I went I really don't feel the need to go again.  It was a VERY LONG flight and how many times do you need to see an island that is only 26 miles long??

I hope this helps.  She'll be fine but I know you're going to miss her terribly.

Donna

hi ,  my name is bev and our daughter and her  hubby  are  both in the  navy in guam, he retires  in october, she just re-uped, they have  been there for a while. she  complain  alot  about the  heat and humidity, the  rest she love, shopping, navy, ships, fellow officers, fellow shipmates, friends  she  made  when she  got there,  and  yes it is a rock, but she doesn't  mind that  either . she  goes with the flow .she is a very well adjusted person, and  looks  for a new adventure around  every corner.i think your daughter should  do the  same thing, it's so beautiful over there, the sunrises and  sunsets, walking  along the beaches . letting the breezes blow through her hair. she'll think she's in a movie. they will keep her busy, she'll have plenty of skypte time, i love  that, i get to see everyone on my computer. better than tv. hope  she has a great time, it's  gonna be like writing the greatest novel. i wish her the best of luck on  her new journey , hope  she  make lots  of new and great  friends , maybe  she'll  run into mine !!!!!!!!

Thanks so much! I'm pretty sure she'll love it, too!

thank you! especially about the phone info!

Hi,

Maybe someone can start a group for Moms with Daughters in Guam.............

Sons in Guam too!!!!!!!!!!!

My son just arrived in Guam and he did what Donna's sailor did regarding a cell phone.  We put his cell phone here on military hold and he got a new local plan over there in Guam.  He is getting wi-fi in the barracks this week so soon we will be able to skype.

I am looking forward to visiting him in Guam, but don't know exactly when that will be.  As Donna said, the flight is long, and as far as I can tell, it is also expensive.
