My son is leaving today for Guam.  We currently use At&T for our cell phone service.  He has an iPhone and I have a droid.  Can anyone please provide me on suggestions as to how we make an affordable transition to international communications?

Motherof3sons, hello! My son has been in Guam since April. Your son will need to get local service when he gets there and then you both can download the app called Viber. Texting is free from this app... I've never used it for calling, I'm sure one of the other mom's know if the call is free. Because of the 15hr difference my son and I Skype from the computer. My son got the iPhone so be can Skype from his phone. I think you can Skype from our android but I just prefer the computer. My son even took "us" on a tour of the island during one of our Skype sessions. If you look at the previous posts you will be able to get some great info from the veteran mom's. Glad to have you aboard!

Motherof3sons....hello! Your son will need to get the local phone service. I do believe it is called GTA. He can get an iphone. The iphone he currently has will not work. You can download Viber like OKCsuzieq said. It's a great app that allows you to text and talk for free. My son does call us from his iphone via the Viber app. It is a 17 hour time difference for us. That makes things tough but you will get the hang of it. What rate is your son and is he assigned to a ship?

hello-also can download "whats app" my son is in guam and we use that and skype:)  good luck!

Thank you all for your feedback.  My son arrived today in Guam. Yesterday, I contacted our cell phone provider and after speaking to a few different people,  I was told that our service covers the US & Guam (since it is considered US territory).  I made sure to get it in writing.  AT&T told me that voice, text & data were all covered as if he were communicating from home.  I was able to speak to my son this morning for about 20 minutes and we had a very clear line. I am hoping we do not get a "surprise" bill!  If we do, I will make sure to follow all of your instructions. Thanks again!

Hi there - so there were no replies. Your AT&T, Sprint, etc. will not work. There are a few ways to go. A great thing is to get him a magic jack and sign it up with a local phone number. When he uses his laptop he can make local calls home! There is cell service here (GTA is on base at the NEX- I had better luck with their service than the other, which I cannot think of the name right now). Also there are free apps, if you both have smart phones, tablets or laptops you can each download VIBER or LINE and sign up. You can then make calls and text each other free. I have not personally used them, because I couldn't get any one to try it on the other end, LOL!

And of course there are webcam services which are free too. Our favorite is oovoo because you can have up to 8 people log on at a time a see each other and chat. The most we have done is 3 (his mom from home, me from Guam, him on deployment)

I hope this helps!

Thank you for the info. I haven't been on in a while. Long story short, the AT&T rep I spoke with was wrong. We got a bill for almost $5,000! Thankfully, I kept all of the info and I was given a credit. My son now has a local service in Guam. We also Skype. Thank God for technology!!!
My daughter and her husband along with my son are stationed in Guam. The whatapp works. I did have an android but decided to invest in an iPhone so I could FaceTime with them. You will get charged for the calls but they don't charge if you FaceTime.
