Merry Christmas! I know that as a group, the holidays are a mixed bag - not all families has their sailors home, or were even able to hear from them, but I hope you all found joy in this special season. While our son Zac is on his first deployment and was not able to be home for the holidays, we have been able to face time with him and his girlfriend Sarah - who got an airline ticket to Guam for her her gift! (part 1) She has been lucky enough to spend nearly 2 weeks - and since she hails from upstate New York, she is especially appreciative of the tropical climate.

But best of all - Christmas Eve, Zac posted this picture on Facebook to announce their engagement!

we are so thrilled!! It will be a long engagement, as he will be in Guam for three years - but they are a match made in heaven. Congratulations Zac and Sarah!

Merry Christmas to all!  We didn't get to Skype but did the viber text and the snap chat so I could see his precious face.  This is a hard Christmas for me so I want to thank you all for your support here on Guam Mom's! I hope each and one you have a wonderful day.

Merry Christmas to all! My sailor was able to video chat with us on his Christmas Eve, our 23rd. He had duty on Christmas, so was busy which was probably good for his first Christmas away. He looked and sounded great, he has made friends and I sent him a recipe and he had made homemade red pork chili and he and his friends had been chowing down on it. I am so proud of him- he has grown up and matured so much since joining the navy, that is the best Christmas present of all!!!!   Again Merry Christmas to all!

Hello ladies!! I, also, have been very busy! I hope you all are getting along without your sailors home. I feel guilty saying how nice it has been to have my sailor home. He has spent some time out of town with friends. He leaves on Saturday early morning to head back to Guam.

LMD Iowa, I have enjoyed picking up his 'messes' of trash, empty glasses, food plates etc. We also went to Navy Fed and secured him an auto loan so he can purchase a new vehicle when he gets back to Guam.

I have also shipped him some expensive stuff over the 2 years he's been in Guam. Golf clubs, gaming systems, gaming monitor. I did list the items on the customs forms but like Geri Kaye said make sure you insure it. I think if you do it in a flat rate box he will get it in a timely manor.

LMD, so sorry to hear about your Dad. it is comforting to know he lived a nice long life! Prayers for you and your family. I live in Phx! We could have met up!! Lol. This is only my second Christmas without my mom....I miss her in so many ways. Silly things usually set me off....a song, an elderly lady in a Christmas sweater! Lol. But I know she is celebrating with Jesus so that makes it easier.

rhondazacsmom, that is so cool that your sons fiance is visiting him! what a great memory for the two of them!

Take care my fellow strong Navy moms!!!

Good morning, ladies........I'm just dropping in to say good morning, and Merry Christmas or happy holidays (whichever holiday you celebrate!) and to let you all know I am thinking about you.....especially those of us who have to go through another holiday with a loved one far away.   Like most of you, I've been super-busy trying to jam Christmas in this year.....is it just me, or did it come up awfully fast?  I feel like I'm still trying to catch up from the 3 weeks I missed.......I went back to Ohio to visit my family at Thanksgiving, got home the following weekend only to get "The Call" early on Tuesday morning that my dad had passed away (at 93, he had a nice long life!), so we had to turn around and drive BACK there.  Lost another weekend to visitation & funeral.....drove thru a snowstorm to get home Sunday night in time to catch a plane the next morning to go to Phoenix for work................WHEW!  Emotionally exhausted after those three weeks of being on the go.  I felt like I didn't even have time to grieve, no less be motivated to drag my Christmas stuff out.   I still did, of course, I still have a child at home I can't deny Christmas to just because my heart's not in it.  My mom did that to me (I don't think she put up a tree for several years in a row when I was in high school), and I can't bring myself to be THAT mom!  :)    Today is my sailor's 23rd birthday (23 on the 23rd!) and since his ship is currently deployed, he's spending it somewhere in the Indian Ocean.  As his birthday & Christmas draw nearer, I find myself really missing him.....even though I know he's only a text-message or Facebook posting away, there's still a lot to be said for those giant shoes being left inside the door, and food wrappers & empty glasses being abandoned next to the couch!  Missing his presence these days......part of that maybe stems from the beautiful Navy honor guard that presented at my dad's funeral.  It hit closer to home, ya know?  So it's a wonderful and yet sad time of year for me this year.  I know it will be fine....but it's still kind of tinged with that feeling of missing someone.    I hope you all have a wonderful holiday & spend it surrounded by people you love!

Dumb question for you:  when any of you have ever shipped packages to your sailor, have you ever sent anything of value?  I am nervous about it and previously have NOT ever sent anything I wasn't afraid to have lost or stolen.  My son ordered a new iPod online & had it shipped to our house so that I could re-pack it in a bigger box with other stuff.  Less "pilferable" that way.  But I still have to declare it on the customs form, which I might as well put a big giant sign on the box that says "hey, rip into this box, free iPod in here".  What if I listed it on the customs form as a "portable media player", would that perhaps be a little less obvious?  I'm nervous as heck about sending something with any value.   Any suggestions?

Best wishes to all as we move into a hopefully GREAT New Year for us all!

Hi Guam Moms! I haven't been here in a while as things have been so BUSY in the run-up to Christmas. I work in a school district so things at work were INSANE until Friday and then my husband and I headed down to the coast (Texas) for the weekend to see friends. Whilst there we got to do a Face Time with our son Zac and his fiance who is visiting him for two weeks - lucky lady! It was so awesome to see his smiling face, though with the time difference he was barely awake and his long yawns were spectacular! Hope to talk again on Christmas. His first in 23 years not spent at home.  I'm sure many or most of you have experienced this - but I have had a hard time getting into the spirit of the season - I am very involved in our church's music ministry and we're in full swing - but at home -  I can't bear to bring out all the decorations that remind me of his childhood Christmas traditions with him so far away! Just thinking about it brings me to tears. So we (literally) have a Charlie Brown tree. One ornament and his baby blanket around the base.

Something I have learned here is about connecting with the ombudsman about deployment/arrival dates, care packages, etc., but when I asked Zac about that, he didn't know anything about it. He said he would ask - but is there anything I can do at this end to get this connection set up? His boat deploys in January and I want to be sure we know how to stay in touch.

So grateful to have this community and hope you all have a wonderful holiday!

Just checking in.  I spent the last week at dress rehearsal for a Christmas Performance our choir did this past weekend and even though I talked to my son Monday last week I didn't get a chance to hop on here.  I was so excited to hear from him.  I was up at 2:30 am just about to turn my light off.  I had stayed up to send him a third Christmas box even though I knew it wouldn't probably get there in time I wanted to send it anyway.  He called and said mom you sound wide awake.  I said I am.  I was packing you another box.  We laughed and talked it was like someone gave me a B12 shot full of energy.  It was amazing to me  how energized I felt after that call.  I really believe it does have physical effects on us too going through deployment.  After each call I can tell I'm instantly on a high and then it lasts for me about two weeks and then if I haven't heard from him I start worrying that he's down or overwhelmed or working so hard.  My mind starts feeling a difference then right when I start realizing that I need to pull myself up and recognize what I'm doing, he calls and it's like just what I needed.

This is just our third year, second deployment and I'm learning to hone in on my weaknesses and try to pull myself up from my emotional nose dives.  Anyway, he made me laugh because I asked him if anyone talks about getting crazy things in boxes from their moms like what I sent him?  He said no.  So we chuckled thinking about how I hear funny things moms decide to send and how he knows no one who tells about them.  However, he said mom, the leaves you sent to remind me of Fall I shared with a couple of the guys that are also here from Ohio and they said they miss Fall.  So he did share that one.  I didn't tell him that I put a Santa hat in his Christmas box and a gel Christmas tree and gel lights to put on his mirror to get in the holiday spirit.  We also laughed because I sent him a T-shirt as a surprise hump day present...it had a picture of his entire family on the front and it said someone in Ohio loves me and he never got it yet and it's been about 8 weeks.  I told him I guess someone seen the word t-shirt on the custom form and kept it and I told him if he sees someone in another country one day walking around with our family on their t-shirt we will know where they got it.  I'm still hoping it shows up but we are losing hope on that one.  I can't understand where they get lost.  I also sent two boxes filled with Christmas treats at the about the second week of November and he hasn't gotten them either.  I hope they get there in time for Christmas.

Got to see a picture of him from the Battalions facebook page and it made my heart jump for joy.  That was all I needed for Christmas...To see his face and see he looks healthy.  Made my holiday.  God bless all.  Love all the activity on here.  I read it all the time even though I don't post everyday.  God Blesslall of you and your families.

kathleen, i'm so glad you got to skype!! That is awesome he loved the cake in a jar and all the other goodies!! My son is enjoying the cooler weather, although we are going to be high 70s this week. The mornings and evenings are very cool. He loves to have to wear a jacket! He has been enjoying golfing with his dad and a trip to Tucson to see all of his high school friends. We celebrated his birthday, very low key but I got to physically hug him this year on his birthday, that hasn't happened the last 2 years.

I wish Guam was closer and we could all go and experience a little part of their world
