He got to Guam the end of August. He has been in the Navy since the end of April. We got a bit spoiled with him in Great Lakes, we visited him several times up there as we are in NW Missouri. Chicago is such a fun town to visit, he got off for the 4th of July weekend and we had such a great time. He is my baby, so with him off on his adventures it is just hubby and me ( plus 2 dogs!) Thanks goodness for grandkids, my daughter lives close and the 4 kids sure are fun.

Hi Cindy! I think we all have great intentions of responding and adding some info but run out of time! I'm glad you check in. I have really enjoyed the info lately! How long has your son been in Guam?

On packing the goodie box just make sure it is a tight fit so stuff doesn't roll around. I've shoved newspaper in the box to make it snug.

Have a great Monday ladies!!

I don't post a lot, I don't know why but I sure enjoy everyone else's posts. I am also getting a goodie bag together, and I will get some leaves in a baggie, what a great idea. My son is also on the Cable, hope all have had a good time and will have  safe travels. I had never heard of the cake in a jar, but I googled it and I am going to send some of those also, they look great and most likely the best bet for a fresh treat. I really appreciated the insight on why maybe he doesn't communicate as much as I would like, it makes perfect sense. I can't imagine how lonely it would get even with good shipmates and new friends. Got his Halloween card in the mail today. Anyway thanks to all that post, they all help me a lot, and I will try and do better!!

I sent some strawberry cake mix cookies once and wrapped each cookie seran wrap, then placed back to back in sandwich baggies and then padded the box with some bubble wrap. They made it! I also sent brownies, packed the same way!

I am so sorry! I forgot about filling out the form!

Under your son's name/ position (IT1 or BM2 etc) write his department so it gets sorted to the correct area (Engineering, Weapons Dept, Deck Department, etc.);

Street address is USS FRANK CABLE

FPO is city

AP is state

zip is 96657-2615 (put all digits now!)

USA (Never write Guam anywhere on package!)

I hope that helps!

Hi LDM Iowa! I'm so glad for so much action on this page! What is your sons rate? Mine is IT. How long has he been in Guam? Did he make the trip to Japan? My son enjoyed a day in Tokyo but they are heading 'home' now. I always get the customs form from the post office instead of filling it out online. I have a good address for the Cable but I think maybe I should private message it? I don't know if it's a bad idea to put it on this page. The last two packages I have sent my son in the last couple of month have gotten there quick! 7-10 days. BUT I have also sent him a package that has taken up to 2 months! Go figure! When you fill out the form not everything matches up...as far as where the address goes, zip code etc....A postal worker should be able to help you.  A goodie box is a great idea. I always bake chocolate chip cookies. I put them in a ziploc baggie then in a ziploc container. He says they are always fresh and in one piece. Chocolate isn't a great idea but something with a little chocolate will be okay. Your baggie of leaves brought a tear to my eye! We are from Arizona...I could put some dirt in a baggie but I think he wouldn't appreciate that! Lol! I would love to go visit him in Guam but the 1800 dollar ticket is such a hardship. He has paid for himself to come home the last two years.

LivNLrn has given us some amazing information!

kttsong, I hope you are doing ok. I have thought about you and prayed for you today. Big hug to you!

If I baked anything, my son would probably call home just to make sure I was feeing alright!!! I'm notorious for failing miserably when it comes to baking.  (My Pennsylvania Dutch ancestors would probably be ashamed of me!)   I will probably send some sugar cookies or something that I know will keep a while...even if it arrives as crumbs, he'll appreciate it.  He really loves those chocolate & peanut butter "buckeyes" (are those considered candy??) but I know they'd probably be giant globs of yuck by the time he got them. Today I went out in the backyard & gathered up some red leaves & will put those in a Ziploc for his box-o-goodies, so he can have a feel of fall.

Hi LMD Iowa! Glad I could be useful! My husband was on the USS Frank Cable as well! He misses lots of things about that ship, LOL! Regarding the package. Hmm, it might be a little cooler in Guam right now, considering the weather lately. I sent stuff to Bahrain last year (hot dessert) and certain things just didn't make it. But it is hotter here in Bahrain than on Guam. One thing that is always a hit is cake in a jar- perhaps you could bake one and decorate with a Halloween theme? If you google it, plenty of people have posted how to bake, wrap and ship it!

Someone made the comment earlier that it's kind of a quiet group on here....ok, I'm raising my had guiltily here! I actually feel like I know all of you because I get your postings automatically in my Yahoo account, so I read all of your posts & follow your updates. My problem is that I never have enough peace & quiet here at home to actually log into N4M's and post anything myself!  ktssong...so sorry for your sadness over your mom, but the true blessing is that you did have her I your life for a while so at least you did have that connection and it made your life somehow complete. It was a gift that you knew her at all.  Even if it wasn't for as long as you had hoped.  I have a friend who will never know her birthmother and will spend her entire life always wondering & not knowing....so you were blessed you had that!  I am still so sorry for your loss....I have lost a daughter, so I know very well how it feels to have a hole in your heart that will always be there.  Be strong.....you have people you don't even know that are out here keeping good thoughts for you.  :)     Charlotte, my son is also on the Frank Cable!  He has been very homesick lately (I guess that happens when you're on the other side of the world) so we are putting together a box to ship to him.  Mainly some of his favorite snacks & a few of his things (favorite books, a couple favorite t-shirts) to make him feel a little more connected to home.  I have read since it's Guam, not to mail anything chocolate since it would melt by the time it got there...LvNLrn, that is good advice, right?  I can't help but want to send him a bag of Halloween candy, hahaha, that's the mom in me!  LvNLrn, THANK YOU so much for the wonderful advice & information you have been posting about Guam!  I feel like I've learned more from you in your posts than my son ever talks about.  :)    He was in San Diego for two years when he received these orders to go to Guam (he thought for sure he was going to Rota, Spain), so it was a weird, new mind-set to get into.  I keep thinking there are worse places to be......but still, any time you're "stuck" on the other side of the planet for the next 2 years, it's kind of a bummer.  I feel bad for him, but I keep telling him the situation will be what you make of it.  WEARY SIGH.....I miss him & know it will be a while before we see him again.  The $1800 airfare has kind of put the kibosh on flying him home anytime soon.

Question for anyone who has mailed a box to Guam:  I'm putting together a Priority Flat Rate box (maybe 2) to send.  I haven't done this in several years (I used to send packages to a soldier friend in Afghanistan).....for the life of me, I can't remember how to fill out the customs forms.  Any advice?

Hope you are all having a good weekend.  It is overcast & chilly here in Iowa today, definitely becoming jeans & sweatshirt weather.  Snow flurries in the forecast for Tuesday........yeahhhh, pretty sure that forecast for Guam isn't going to be happening anytime soon!  :)

HUGS to you all........I don't know any of you, but yet feel like I know all of you.  take care & God bless.  Have a great week.   Les

My son didn't do too much touring when he first got to Guam but then some friends who had been there awhile drug him along! He got his scuba diving license(?) and has enjoyed scuba diving and golf! Oh boy does that kid love to golf! He is always excited to get a package no matter what the content! But snacks are always welcome!

I agree with LivNLrn about your mom ktssong.....I pray this weekend brings you peace. Hanging onto the fact that you did get to meet her and make that connection. I love the closeness of your family and kids! You are blessed!
