Welcome Linda! Your son will not be alone. Other sailors with or without family usually invite the single guys over if the ship is not doing something. My son has been in Hawaii for 2 years now and has never spent a holiday alone. Someone will take him in.

I am thankful to have all of you Moms/Dads, etc. on N4M to share with. I feel much better knowing I can come here when I have questions or need comfort.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Julie, I will be there from the 1st through the end of the week. My son is on stand down that week and is very excited that we are finally coming to see him.

What boat is your son on?

Julie - we are jealous! Our ombudsman said it was a GREAT time to go as the ships that are in port are on standdown so you will get to enjoy some nice time with your sailor. :-)

Hey Linda - welcome and I will be with you this year; missing our sailor during the holidays and everyday for that matter! Is your son on sea or shore duty there? Our son was home recently for his grandfather's funeral and said the ship is doing a really nice dinner for Thanksgiving and they were going all out. Being a former Navy wife for 10 years, the ship/commands generally always did a nice meal for the crews as they become "family" over time.

I will ask my son. He had a car broken down but don't know how he got it moved. It may take a few days, he is not at base right now.

Also Kirsten, don't give up hope yet. In March of this year my son requested leave (his first time home in 18 months!) for his younger brother's high school graduation in May. He never received word if it was approved or not. We all assumed it was denied. He was out to sea on a short trip and received word on April 25th that his leave was approved beginning April 30th after 4 pm. He did not return to dry land until April 30th!!!!!!!!! We received his email on April 26th (from his boat) telling us to book his flights for late on the 30th or early on May 1st. We were in shock and emailed back to confirm he meant the Friday of the same week! He did, so we hurriedly found flights for him. He was lucky to find one for about $600 leaving the early morning of the 1st.

I was concerned he would not be back in time to receive the email with his flight numbers in it! He missed graduation by 2 weeks but we all enjoyed his visit when he was here.

Unpredictable would be one way I would describe the Navy in this situation!

Sorry to hear that Kirsten. Maybe he will be invited to eat with one the other sailors. That is what my son did last year. If he doesn't know anyone yet, Pat's suggestions on the MWR site are a good idea.

Mary, do you know if the same type of thing happens around Christmas? My son will be out for Thanksgiving, but this would be good info if it happens at Christmas time also.
