Hi all, I haven't been on too much since returning home but had to add a few words about the Red Cross in case of a death since we so recently had to use their services.

They were very accomodating and explained that it would take 2 -6 hours for notification as the process requires the message to go thru the Pentegon. Our son knew that his grandfather had passed (he was calling me two or three times a day) and we did not expect him to fly in from Hawaii for a grand parent but his ship was very accomodating and because Nick had the leave and funds for the trip they expedited the paperwork so he could be at the services.

He brought home the message that he received from Red Cross and it spelled out that the servicemember was aware of the death so I think instead of the Chaplain it was delivered by his department head. In addition to his ss # number and command info. We had to provide information about the funeral home and hospice service so they could confirm everything prior to the message going to our son.

I must say the Red Cross and his ship was very sensitive and handled the matter post haste. Our appreciation goes out to both of them.

Thanks for the info Pat; I did not know that for sure either.

It may make things easier by going through the Red Cross. They confirm the circumstances before contacting the Navy so that would eliminate some of the red tape. Hopefully someone else will know definitively so that we all will know for sure.

Yes, Lily. That is the only way if they are underway. That is the recommended contact by the Navy, if I remember correctly. I have not had to do this but my son's recruiter had it happen to him and he told us to follow that procedure if needed.

Hi all, I've been out of town for a couple of weeks...

We have our sailor home for all the wrong reasons. My father passed away last week and we did the official Red Cross notification and our son called to say he would be landing at 6am. His ship was wonderful about getting everything signed off and approving leave for him. My father was a WW2 vet and we had a military funeral with the honor guard, many vets in attendance and they did three volleys and the taps. Our son and my nephew (who is a Seabee) were both in their dress blues for the service. My dad would have been pleased.

I also send my prayers for the victims, their friends and families. The national news mentioned that the officer who started the killing spree had just been told he would be going to Iraq. What a waste.
