LindaGirl - I still miss Long Island after 40 years and you can't go back.  Life is tough and then we grow up and its even tougher.  My son is finally enjoying it a little - see the pictures on my homepage.  I tried to post them here but I don't think I did it right  They are the three I have marked "hiking"

Hi Navymom3013, I feel for your son & hope that things are finally looking up for him. Your son should be getting his car very soon, as it took about 6 weeks for our son to get his car, much less time then we expected. Our son too, was very disillusioned in the beginning, as the first 10 weeks he wasn't even housed with his crew, as there were no openings in the building & he had to wait for someone to leave, plus he didn't have his car, & missed all of his friends, terribly. Now after 7 months though, I think he has finally settled in & feels more at home, although he still misses Long Island, friends & family terribly. It will take time for him to adjust, but hopefully, in the end, he'll be ok. Hope he gets his car & clothes real soon.

Hi Tanner's Grandma - me and you will learn together - mostly from this site - my son is still waiting for his car to get there and it's been 8 weeks.  They don't even have an estimated arrival date for his clothes.  He had his moments where he was totally confused and not sure if he had made the right decision - He seems OK now but he still has his days.  He has been going to the beach on the North Shore with some guys when he can.  I am so thankful for his friends for helping him to get around.  I am sure when he gets his car - he will help others too.  Being away from the home he has known and all his school friends is sometimes overwhelming.  But the most important thing is that every time I see him- and I will be going to Hawaii soon too - he is almost unrecognizable in how much he is more of a maturing man than the boy he was, when he left for boot camp.  They all look so good in those dress whites..

Welcome Tanner's grandma!

JHAZMom Have a wonderful visit with your Sailor!

Pam - Yes very proud! Wow, 18 months what a long time...big sigh. When they are young like my Marine who is 19 they're still going through all those growing up stages. I find myself just staring at him and thinking what a young manly man he's becoming! I do not look forward to those even more lengthy intervals where we don't see our boys. Nine months seemed so long but 18 months...good grief hard to even contemplate but I know it can happen.
I bet RIMPAC was so amazing I'm enjoying the updates and photos that the Navy is sharing.

KevsMom93- you must be so proud of your Marine! Enjoy that visit - they go too quickly. Seeing our son last week was the first time in 18 months.

Our son is a Corpsman currently attached to a Marine Unit.  He'll probably never see a ship but he said that was ok with him!  LOL - RIMPAC was going on while we were there and it was interesting seeing all the different countries all over the island.

Tanner's grandma - My son has been in for over 4 years now and we are still learning about this whole military experience. I think the worst part of our trip was the time change and jet jag.  HI is 6 hours behind us here on the East coast.

Thanks for sharing your experience!  We're off for a 5 day visit at the end of the month and can't wait to hug our dear sailor and experience the Island!!!  Thanks for helping me keep connected to such an important part of our and our son's life!!

Thank you for the warm welcomes to this site. I am a brand new member and grandmother to a sailor on the USS Buffalo. This is all new to me and has taken me a while to find a site that was current.  He loves the navy and his job and plans to stay in longer than the eight years he signed on for.  I am extremely proud of him and hope to be able to learn more about his sub, and everything in general regarding his new life (that we are allowed to know)!  I plan to come to Hawaii sometime while he is there (absolutely no idea when than might be (Lol) but I will be asking lots of questions then!  Am enjoying reading your comments and being part of this group.
