Interior Communications Electricians (ICs) install, maintain and repair the equipment needed for interior communications within ships and shore facilities. These communication systems include public address systems, interior telephone systems, alarm systems, engine telegraphs to communicate orders for changes in engine speed from the bridge (ship's command station) to the engine room, certain kinds of ship control and equipment monitoring devices, the ship's gyrocompass, the rudder position indicator, audio-visual equipment for the ship's TV entertainment systems, advanced navigation and various other equipment.
The duties performed by IC's include:
Maintaining and repairing interior communications systems;
Preparing and interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams and sketches;
Installing and inspecting dry cell and storage batteries;
Recharging wet cell batteries;
Testing interior communications and gyrocompass equipment;
Installing telephone and other communications circuits, boxes, switchboards and bell buzzer systems;
Maintaining plotters and dead reckoning equipment;
Maintaining and operating TV systems;
Working Environment :
People in the IC rating work in many different situations, at sea and ashore. While most of their work is performed indoors, it may be in a clean or dirty environment of a shop-like nature, and it may be in any kind of climate or temperature. IC's usually work closely with others. Most systems IC's work on is of the modern solid state electronic type, making the rating a very technical profession.
A-School Information:
Great Lakes, IL -- 10 weeks
Some Interior Communications Electricians who graduate from "A" school go on to advanced training courses such as gyrocompass and advanced TV maintenance. Others are assigned to duty stations where they can continue learning their rating through on-the-job training.
C-Schools (Advanced Specialized Training):
Shipboard Information, Training, and Entertainment (SITE)
Integrated Launch And Recovery Television Surveillance (ILARTS)
Class Ship Interior Communications Subsystems Technician (FFG-7SS)
Fiber Optic Data Multiplex System Operation and Maintenance (FODMS)
Data Multiplex System (DMS)
Vertical and Short Take-Off and Landing Optical Landing System (VSTOL)

Hi Jana! Thanks for thinking of me. I'm getting so excited! PIR is less than 2 week away. My SR's letters are so positive and he's having the time of his life. He's so proud of himself and that's good to see. I'm doing good as well. My SR is a little older than most so it's not as heartbreaking without him home. He lived away from home for a couple of years. I actually hear from him more now I think! Anyway, thanks for the hugs and thinking of me.
Hello to all just checking on everyone.
Paige had an adventure of a life time and welcome back to her and her son.
Tamara hope you are hangin in there your PIR is approaching very soon. sending you HUGs

Much success to him in his new training. As i have said earlier not too many IC out there to join We are pretty special !! Any questions about A school please ask
Jana, my son is a fleet returnee for IC school. His PIR was 01/27/2012. He was on a submarine but was injured and the injury caused other health problems that disqualified him from subs so he has had to go back to school.
donnab did you ask in your PIR group? i recently posted in some groups so others know our group. as for when my son was in A school i knew 2 others they never joined this group but we are friends in our PIR group on FB.doyou belong to that one?
My son started IC school in Great Lakes the middle of June any others have sailors in that class?
Jana Thanks for all the information!
Irene - I live in east Orlando, I've gotten tons of great information from these pages. I joined the FB page because I thought some of you would be over there and I find it so much easier to communicate on FB. We have PIR July 25 so I'm getting more and more excited every day. My SR sounds so positive and upbeat when he calls. I'm so proud of him!
Hi everyone. I hope you all and your sailors are good. I am sorry I haven't been on in a while.
Jen and Justin are doing great. They had a baby boy in May. He is Justin, Jr. and is beautiful. I went to Norfolk for two weeks in June. I loved it and love him. I am sure all Naval bases are great but I have to tell you how great Norfolk is.
There is so much to do. If your sailor gets stationed there make sure they sign up on the Naval Station's facebook. They have free movie and bowling nights. They have a lot of get togethers and trips to D.C., N.Y. and white water rafting.
Jen was in the tour's office before she had the baby and is now in the public affairs office. She will get new orders in about six months. She was supposed to be on the Jason Dunham before her pregnancy. She is not sure if she will go back to that. Justin is still on the Eisenhower. He loves it. It is still dry docked but they are hoping it will be done by February and moved out of the shipyard and back to Norfolk.
Paige, I know you are enjoying your vacation.
Jana, I know you are counting down the days.
Tamara, I think you will get better information from Navy for Moms PIR than the facebook PIR page. Some of the moms are a little crazy on facebook. Not just on the PIR page but on the Moms of Norfolk too. Moms of Florida seems good so far. I live in Coral Springs. Where do you live?
I wish you all the best and hope you will be seeing your sailors soon.
Take care,
Irene
