Interior Communications Electricians (ICs) install, maintain and repair the equipment needed for interior communications within ships and shore facilities. These communication systems include public address systems, interior telephone systems, alarm systems, engine telegraphs to communicate orders for changes in engine speed from the bridge (ship's command station) to the engine room, certain kinds of ship control and equipment monitoring devices, the ship's gyrocompass, the rudder position indicator, audio-visual equipment for the ship's TV entertainment systems, advanced navigation and various other equipment.
The duties performed by IC's include:
Maintaining and repairing interior communications systems;
Preparing and interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams and sketches;
Installing and inspecting dry cell and storage batteries;
Recharging wet cell batteries;
Testing interior communications and gyrocompass equipment;
Installing telephone and other communications circuits, boxes, switchboards and bell buzzer systems;
Maintaining plotters and dead reckoning equipment;
Maintaining and operating TV systems;
Working Environment :
People in the IC rating work in many different situations, at sea and ashore. While most of their work is performed indoors, it may be in a clean or dirty environment of a shop-like nature, and it may be in any kind of climate or temperature. IC's usually work closely with others. Most systems IC's work on is of the modern solid state electronic type, making the rating a very technical profession.
A-School Information:
Great Lakes, IL -- 10 weeks
Some Interior Communications Electricians who graduate from "A" school go on to advanced training courses such as gyrocompass and advanced TV maintenance. Others are assigned to duty stations where they can continue learning their rating through on-the-job training.
C-Schools (Advanced Specialized Training):
Shipboard Information, Training, and Entertainment (SITE)
Integrated Launch And Recovery Television Surveillance (ILARTS)
Class Ship Interior Communications Subsystems Technician (FFG-7SS)
Fiber Optic Data Multiplex System Operation and Maintenance (FODMS)
Data Multiplex System (DMS)
Vertical and Short Take-Off and Landing Optical Landing System (VSTOL)
Stabilized Gyrocompass Maintenance (WSN)

be safe this Holiday weekend. I will be attending our hometown parade with NAVY PRIDE
I am so excited my son got his orders today and he will be going to Norfolk VA after graduation next week. He seem to be enjoying IC. We are all looking forward to the next chapter.
study groups are a good idea! my daughter was in one and they help a lot. She just got her housing-the move in day will occur when she's on her first underway, so her husband is on his own! She told me there's an opportunity for family to board when they get to Santa Barbara and take it down to San Diego. sounds like fun, but I think I'm a little old for those ladders! lol. she's excited for her underway--
take care everyone

Recola wow your life is certainly stressful with all those kids being in the military. Im havinga hard time with one.
My son had a few good friends at A school. that really helped. they are still friends. I will keep her in my prayers. Yes they are busy. You can see from my posts my son is on a ship. Long days but i think he is liking his job. While on an underway they are work eat exercise and a guess sleep a little. But is always happy to see land.
Thanks for the kind words Paige.

Thanks for the welcome Paige! :)
My Sailor had her PIR 5/2 and she's at Great Lakes right now - she started school yesterday and is extremely nervous about how hard the class is. She said she's heard a lot of talk about it being really tough - so she's already stressing out! I told her to relax ... and realize she won't be the only one struggling and to make sure to take advantage of study groups - and if there's not one - MAKE one.
My husband and I are anxious to hear about the IC family and how it all works. Curious on where she will be sent - if IC's are usually sent to ships right off - how do other IC's like their job - etc. So many more questions. She's our only girl in the military. We have 4 sons - I have an older boy that's a Sailor on the USS Bataan and out at sea, a boy that just got out of the Air Force almost a year ago, one at MEPS today to sign up for the Marine Corps and my baby will be a Senior in high school next year and plans on joining the Army. Yep - military runs deep in our blood. I'm an Army brat, hubby is a Marine brat and a retired Marine that served 22 years. :)

Medical screening not sure was he having an issue? My son actually was on hold for a month after A school before he got to his duty station.
An Ic that was in A school with my son went on to C school in San Diego. So Steven got to spend some time with him. He got orders for Norfolk. He is from Minnesota. So on his way there I had the Pleasure of him staying overnite with us. We live in western Pennsylvania. It was Awesome. Almost like having our son home. Now a have an East coast son !!
