Interior Communications Electrician

Interior Communications Electricians (ICs) install, maintain and repair the equipment needed for interior communications within ships and shore facilities. These communication systems include public address systems, interior telephone systems, alarm systems, engine telegraphs to communicate orders for changes in engine speed from the bridge (ship's command station) to the engine room, certain kinds of ship control and equipment monitoring devices, the ship's gyrocompass, the rudder position indicator, audio-visual equipment for the ship's TV entertainment systems, advanced navigation and various other equipment.

The duties performed by IC's include:

Maintaining and repairing interior communications systems;
Preparing and interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams and sketches;
Installing and inspecting dry cell and storage batteries;
Recharging wet cell batteries;
Testing interior communications and gyrocompass equipment;
Installing telephone and other communications circuits, boxes, switchboards and bell buzzer systems;
Maintaining plotters and dead reckoning equipment;
Maintaining and operating TV systems;

Working Environment :

People in the IC rating work in many different situations, at sea and ashore. While most of their work is performed indoors, it may be in a clean or dirty environment of a shop-like nature, and it may be in any kind of climate or temperature. IC's usually work closely with others. Most systems IC's work on is of the modern solid state electronic type, making the rating a very technical profession.

A-School Information:

Great Lakes, IL -- 10 weeks

Some Interior Communications Electricians who graduate from "A" school go on to advanced training courses such as gyrocompass and advanced TV maintenance. Others are assigned to duty stations where they can continue learning their rating through on-the-job training.

C-Schools (Advanced Specialized Training):

Shipboard Information, Training, and Entertainment (SITE)

Integrated Launch And Recovery Television Surveillance (ILARTS)

Class Ship Interior Communications Subsystems Technician (FFG-7SS)

Fiber Optic Data Multiplex System Operation and Maintenance (FODMS)

Data Multiplex System (DMS)

Vertical and Short Take-Off and Landing Optical Landing System (VSTOL)

Stabilized Gyrocompass Maintenance (WSN)

New Horizons, welcome and I too thank you for your upcoming service.  My son is not on a ship but on an island and works with the AFN (Armed Forces Network) he spends his days working on the various things that break down or need upgraded in the TV and Radio stations that they have there.  He loves his job, and I am sure you will love the rating also.  It is as Paige told you very heavy with the electronics. If you have any other questions we are here for you.

Hi I'm a future sailor, going in as E3 with an IC rating.  I was hoping if anyone could enlighten me on any details of what this rating entails.  I've read the descriptions, I've googled, but I'm really looking for an inside look.

I see some of you have daughters/sons already in A-school.  Have they told you what they learn and how?  or what it's like? is it exciting?  Are they having fun?  what are they learning exactly?  Has anyone shipped off yet?  What's the job like? deployed or not.  lol I know I have a lot of questions and I know most of you are the parents of the sailors themselves so no pressure ^.^
I'm just really excited and hungry to know more.  I ship out on the 21st of Sept.
I just want to be as prepared as possible for what is to come.

Thanks a lot in advance for any advice/insight you can give ^.^

Kathleen10 - If I remember correctly the answer is no. That's probably not what you wanted to hear though. :(

My son is at GL waiting for A school for IC, does anyone know if he has the ability to phase up so he can have weekend liberty over nite before he even starts A school?

Welcome Jen and Kathleen, My son got his orders the end of A school also and he did not get what he had wished for nor did anyone get to pick depending on their class ranking like some do.  Everyone in his class was on a DDG except my son who is on Diego Garcia, he loves that tropical island.  He loves his job also.  Glad to hear about everyones sailors and that they are doing well.

Thank you for the info! He's doing really well in ATT school. I believe he's going to finished in the allotted time which seems to be a big issue for most of the people in his class right now. Hopefully the hold for A-School won't be long. I'm going to go visit him at the end of next month for the weekend. I can't wait!

Hi All! My future fiancé is currently in ATT school at GL. He's almost done and should hopefully be starting A-school soon. I hear that they receive their orders in A-school. Does anybody know how far into A-School they get before receiving their orders? We're wishing, hoping and praying that he gets based in San Diego. *Fingers Crossed*

Welcome Kathleen!  It looks like Paige did a great job of answering your questions. I'd actually forgotten about the SCC part, but I guess my daughter completed that too.  It seems so long ago now.

As far as I remember the liberty came in phases also.  I think Phase 1 is when they're allowed to leave base, but they must be in uniform (peanut butters) and they must have a liberty buddy.  We are fortunate enough that we live approximately 3 hrs. or so from Great Lakes so on our sailors first Sunday off we met her and her liberty buddy at Union Station in Chicago.  We had time to eat a huge lunch in Greek Town, visit the Sears Tower (free for our sailors), do a lot of walking, and shop in the market area of Union Station.  After that when she earned the next liberty phase she was able to come home with us for a weekend.  I think that involved her submitting liberty chits, but I don't remember all of the specifics.  I know there is a certain radius they are allowed to travel within.

Hello group,

My name is Kathleen. My son just graduated from BC and is going to A school at GL for IC, he is in temporary barracks for 2 weeks then will be transferred to his "regular" barracks. If anyone has any info to share I am all ears, or shall I say eyes for reading. I am not sure if school started today or if it is delayed, I am hoping to find out soon. And does anyone know about the 3 phases and when he might get liberty again. Thank You.
