Oh, BTW, if he takes a copy of his shot records with him, it'll save him getting about 12 shots!!! My son thought I was anal-retentive giving him a folder with xeroxed info like that) until he got to breeze through the innoculation stations!

Hi, Dylansmom! You asked some great questions. Here are MY advice, but others can chime in with theirs:
1) POA - If you can easily get one done before he leaves, it might be a good idea. It saves him giving the Navy permission to give you info if he gets injured, sick, etc. It also gives you the ability to deal with financial and insurance matters while he's deployed, if necessary. If a signature isn't possible before leaving, he can sign on his first leave.
2) If the dentist feels his wisdom teeth need to come out, I'd do it NOW. If he has it done in bootcamp, he'll be fending for himself in a med ward afterwards. Kids never think about complications -- if they occur, I'd want my son within my reach. My son had his done six weeks before leaving and was grateful to have "mommy" make him shakes and fix his ice packs.
3) Leave the cell phone at home. True, it can be mailed, but it's one less thing to worry about. Be sure to send phone cards with him; he's allowed to keep those. If he has time, he can call you with one of those -- or tell him to call collect to YOUR CELL PHONE (and wear it on a lanyard around your neck)! Many moms have cried because they weren't home when the sailor called the house and many sailors have cried because no one was there when they had earned a phone call. RDC's ('drill instructors') don't give "do-overs!"

The ONLY things he'll be allowed to keep when he arrives at BC are:
- a book of scripture (if he chooses to take one)
- a wristwatch (make sure it can take a beating; and 24-hr numerals are good)
- a small religious medallion/pendant
- his wallet with only a DL (more than $20 will be sent home); put a family photo in the Bible

ANYTHING other than these will be sent back to you. And "occasionally," packages get lost in the mail ;-) Hugs, k.

Hello Everyone,

I am not necessarily new to all this, but I am if that makes sense. My son was in the US Naval Sea Cadets since he was 11 and completed that. During that time, he did their two week trainings each summer.

Now that he's enlisted and going to boot camp, I feel like I should know more, but seem to be finding out things I had never thought of. I sat down and talked with my son about the POA and MPOA. How concerned should I be to get these done before he leaves. Of course, he doesn't seem to think I should be so worried. He did agree to put me on his accounts in case I need to do anything for him that way. He does tend to think I'm over reacting a bit with the other.

Also, I mentioned to him what I read about the wisdom teeth here. He said I need to not worry about that either that the Chief at his recruiter's office told him that it's only a possibility that they will take out his wisdom teeth and that if they did it would mean a week off and a week's delay in his graduation date. I would like to be able to give him a more firm answer, but he is tending to believe more of what comes from the recruiter's office. My cousin's step son is in the Navy and recently did boot camp and A school and said not to always trust what info comes from the recruiters.

He also said for him to take his phone with him so he could use it to call and they would send it back home in the box. Is that a safe thing to do? I don't want it to get lost or damaged.

Any information you all have would be greatly appreciated. I am really starting to get anxious and just want to make sure I am not overdoing stuff, but don't want to miss anything either.

Thanks...Robin

Starting on Monday March 1, 2010
On The Border is proud to help support our troops. The first Monday of each month will be "Support The Troops Day" - 10% of all proceeds will go to USO (United Services Organization) of Indiana to help support our troops here in Indiana!

I don't know if this is state-wide or not... be sure to call your local restaurant to see if it's participating! (Hmmm, maybe I should make the Westies dinner on first Mondays and ALWAYS at OTB?!) k.

My (baby) boy is back in port! He's grumpy... pulled in Saturday afternoon, had to stand watch all night, and had to work yesterday through Wednesday. Missed Valentine's Day, and then girlfriend's birthday today. He DEFINITELY needs sleep and homecooked food. But I'm glad I know exactly where he is now! k.
