navymomjulie, I looked up your s-i-l's name.  I definitely recognize it.  Don't know if it would be a sister or cousin, but there's a red head married to a friends' son that was a D... also.  Another small world moment today--I was at a business in Davenport this morning and saw a young women with three little kids who I recognized as a student of mine.  Wait for it...............she and her husband live in.............GOOSE LAKE!!!

Thank you Ruth!  That is good to know.  My oldest daughter and her family live in Milan and my son-in-law is vice principal at Washington Jr. High School in Rock Island.  He grew up in Rock Island!  Small world:)  Two of my grandchildren go to school in the Rock Island District and my daughter is a sign language interpreter for Rock Ridge School District. My grandsons are in kindergarten and fourth grade at Thomas Jefferson in Milan.  I am saving my son's letters in a scrap book to look through in the coming months and years and I hope I am amazed at how things progress for him on this adventure:)

navymomjulie, I am from Brooklyn....Iowa, NOT New York!  I live in Rock Island now, but I'm still an Iowa girl and always will be.  I purposely chose an ob/gyn in Davenport so my kids would be born in Iowa!  My husband doesn't say anything and never has other than he tells people he had to import a wife to find a good one. LOL  My son just got here from Great Lakes--he's an instructor and came home for his class reunion this weekend.  They all seem to survive and find their way after the initial questioning of if they've done the right thing.  In fact, I have my son's letters from boot that have all the doubts.  Your son will be fine!  Someone will help if they see him struggling.  The bigger problem is usually getting everyone to keep mouths shut and learning how to work as a team.

I will not send any packages to boot camp.  That is the one thing my sons recruiter told us.  He would pay dearly if that happened.  I even hesitated about sending stamps and a phone card but my son asked for them and then I knew it was ok.

Ha!  I like reading all the comments about our small town of Bryant near Goose Lake!  We do get mail, too!  We are just 20 minutes north of DeWitt if that helps.  Funny how wierd it is when you hear of a small place you have never heard of before.  It made me smile and I really needed the lift!  Thank you all for being so supportive.  I was hopiing to get a letter today but no such luck.  Maybe tomorrow.  Maybe a phone call this weekend!  That would be better:)  I am hoping that my son was just tired and worn out when he wrote to me.  It is not his nature at all to give up and he wanted this so badly.  I just keep sending letters and encouraging cards and stamps and tell him that I love him and he can do this and I am his number 1 cheerleader.  I am waiting for a letter that says..."Mom you can stop acting so goofy and enough about the cheerleader thing!"  Then I will know he is okay.  He is really worried about the written tests.  He did very well on the physical testing.  I told him I am praying that he passes them all and then he can call me and let me know he is a Sailor!  It just has to get better for him.  Thank you all for your encouraging words and suggestions.  I really appreciate them all.

Bryant is by Goose Lake!  LOL.  It's north of Davenport, west of Clinton.  Jo, just one correction to your message--Navymomjulie, DON'T send packages to boot camp!  Lots of letters and cards, but packages can make his life miserable.  You don't want to do anything that calls attention to him.  If you send cookies, etc, he'll have to open the package in front of his instructors and watch them eat the goodies.  Not good.  Save all that stuff for after PIR.  And make him take you to the NEX on Green Bay Rd (not on base, too crowded) so you can get your Navy mom shirt!

Absolutely!  You can send jerky.  It's the favorite food on the ships--they won't care if it's beef or venison.  If you need addresses, I'm sure we can find you some.  Also Molly's Adopt a Sailor has addresses.  You don't have to have a huge packing party like I did--you can send one box or five, not 60 like we did.

As far as homesick recruits, oh, yes, I think they all have doubts and homesickness for the first few weeks.  It does get better.  Mary is right, julie, join the PIR group and you'll find lots of moms going through the same things.  Eventually, every division will have a little sub group within the PIR group so you will share ups and downs together.

I actually do know where Bryant is!  I'm going to post a number of things going on in the QC up in the discussions.  Julie and relong, please join us sometime!  And join the group Quad-Cities Moms, Joined by a River.  We do lots of stuff now.

Hello!  I am from Bryant Iowa.  Does anyone know where that is?  My SR shipped put on September 19th and I got his first letter yesterday 10/5/11.  I was shoccked to hear that he is so homesick and wants to rethink his future path.  Is this normal?  It is not like my sone to sound so down and homesick.  I am worried.

Yes! I'm in the QC.

I'm looking for Navy moms in the QC area, I'm in Eldridge. My son left for basic last week and I just got his box yesterday. I was wondering if there is a mom group that has activities in this area.
