Have a great trip! And congrats! We do love those Iowa boys for sure. Mine leaves for boot camp on Monday. He's very excited. My hubby is a retired master chief and they have been talking Navy 24/7!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSHe8gDu43A This is about the Patriot Guard Riders. I tried to attach the link, but it wouldn't show up, so copy and paste, I guess.

You can go to the USO website and write a note of support to a wounded warrior that will be hand delivered.

What week is Derek in now? Just know that my son will be with him week 5 during weapons training. They won't know each other, but they will be together! And "Guns" is hard on recruits--their lives depend on it. If he doesn't treat the simulation range like a game, he'll do great. I actually live across the river in Illinois, but I am a Hawkeye fan unless Iowa State is playing someone else! I'd have to say stay in the room, too!

I hope no one is near the flooding or at least in danger of their home going under.

Navy Ball is October 16 in Davenport, Iowa, in case anyone is interested. It's fun to go.

Mary, I'll see if my son can give us some idea of what's going on with your son's situation. He can't look into this specifically, but maybe he's got some idea. I didn't talk to him till today--he had to pass the last requrement to become a Master Training Specialist. Today he did it! Then he went home and slept. He's still fighting pneumonia.

To all you knitters and crocheters--there's a wonderful organization, www.citizensam.org that has patterns for scarves, gators, hats, and helmet liners. My Legion Auxiliary (Davenport) has sent hundreds to them to send over to Afghanistan, but you can use the instructions for your sailor, too. They require military colors (the Auxiliary ladies say "boring!") of black, brown, tan, etc. Also they need to be made from wool as it doesn't melt in a fire--for the safety of our troops. There are other neat ideas on their site, too.

if he's really being a butt head, you need to send him cookies or brownies. His instructors will enjoy them as he stands by and watches them eat them. Of course, my son just called and said they're cracking down on weight limits though.

Hopefully, he'll write. My son won't actually order him to write or even know which recruit he is, but he does walk by randomly and occasionally and tell recruits to write. I'm going to be in Ft. Dodge on the 26-27-28th. Are any of you close by?
