I haven't checked in for ages, it seems! Welcome OBandKay. I'm in Rock Island (still claim Iowa as my home though!). Some of the Illinois moms meet in the Chicago area, and I went a year ago--great fun! Illinois moms had a gathering not too long ago in Champaign. I belong to the Iowa, Illinois, and Chicago moms group so I've got my bases covered! My son is stationed at GL as an instructor so if your sailors have gone through basic in the last year, they've seen my son.

At the moment, I'm also a part-time Texan, so I've missed all the ugly weather you've been getting. This week in the Rio Grande Valley has been gorgeous. So far, I haven't found any Texas Navy moms around me. I'll be back in April, so maybe we can get together then.

As a retired teacher, how well I remember snow days! We had lots of them because of rural roads and wind blowing the snow around. I'm in Texas to escape the cold--LOL. I'm about as far south as you can go, about 10-15 miles from the border, and we're cold. There hasn't been a freeze yet, but maybe tonight. The highest temp we've seen today is 40 with lots of wind. Fortunately, we have a park model with a furnace on LP gas. I feel like we're heating the outside at times--the windows leak pretty badly, but we'll survive. Most residents of our park are Iowans and Canadians, so you don't hear complaining! We all know we could be shoveling snow.

How about those Hawks?! Not exactly warm in Texas where I'm at, but warmer than Iowa!

Merry Christmas to everyone! I had hoped to get to Grinnell this week, but the weather isn't cooperating. Our sailor isn't coming home from Great Lakes either. We'll celebrate quietly for the next few days, then the granddaughters will visit on Saturday and Sunday--that's when the fun begins!

Guam! Wow! I know another sailor that's stationed there. His dad lives in Geneseo. I think he's on a sub, but I'll check. Engaged? eek. Are you ready for that? I hope they take their time. So many sailors want the connection at home, but it doesn't work. I wish them well and congratulations!

I'm home for two weeks after a month's adventure! I took my sailor's dog, Tex, and drove to the Houston area in November. He flew from chicago to meet a young woman he'd been talking and writing to--I got to meet her, too. Nice person, but no chemistry for them. He and I visited my brother in Houston, then drove to Tucson for Thanksgiving. My husband flew; his family is all there now. Had a wonderful time! Son and Tex flew back on Dec. 1; we drove to our winter home in the Rio Grande Valley near McAllen. Got things unpacked, missed the blizzard here! Flew home on Sunday. We'll be here till New Years Eve when we go back to Texas. Spending time with the granddaughters and hoping our sailor will get home for Christmas. Merry Christmas to all!

Michelle, send me that teacher's email address so my sailor can get a thank you out. Busy, busy, busy. Running granddaughters to girl scouts and dance, getting ready to visit my brother in Houston and mother-in-law in Tucson. Looking forward to warmer weather though we sure can't complain too much, can we?.....yet!

I just wrote a huge piece about the Navy Ball and it disappeared! I'm going to rewrite and put on my blog.

He did receive a card--he's sometimes not good about responding, but he could just show up at your school! I'll tell him he has to do something. He's appreciative, just too busy sometimes.

Life is crazy here. My son is home for the weekend to go to the Navy Ball. His little girls are here, too, so they're cooking and making craft messes! My dad is in the VA hospital in Iowa City with a broken hip, had surgery surgery yesterday. He's getting great care and will probably go back to Grinnell on Monday.

Just got a call from Andy's dad at the Arsenal. He got a call from Andy that he's faxing him all the PH stuff. He had to get some form from Afghanistan so he called there to talk to a national guard 1st Sgt that would have the info he needed. When this guy found out he was Navy, he refused to help him! I am just sick. I know he'll get it, but it's just that he has to fight for what he deserves and he shouldn't have to!
