My son is an excellent cook! Some girl is missing out on a great guy! He made chicken alfredo--yum, even if it was chicken helper, he adds his own special touches just like his dad. We're heading to Brookfield--late start, but it will be fine in this heat and humidity.

Welcome, submom! It's not as "exotic" as Norfolk, but I'm near Great Lakes tonight visiting my son with his two little girls. Arrived late this afternoon and have to be on the road shortly after noon on Sunday, but tomorrow we're packing as much into our day as possible. His girls have never seen his apt. He moved here in Feb., but with a 3-4 hour drive, a weekend isn't enough time. His ex let me have the girls last night so we could visit finally. They've been to the base when he was home on leave last September when he was checking out apartments, but this is the first time not in a hotel. The three of them are playing Wii and daddy is cooking, too, for his girls.

Whitey’s New “Sgt Camo” Ice Cream Going to Iraq for Troops

Moline, IL. Soldiers in Iraq will soon be treated to “Sgt. Camo” Ice Cream, the newest creamy creation from Whitey’s Ice Cream in Moline, IL. Whitey’s has teamed up with the Military Warriors Support Foundation to send the camouflaged colored ice-cream to cool off troops in the deserts of Iraq.

The idea for the sending the ice cream treat to soldiers came after Whitey’s owners, Jeff & Jon Tunberg decided to donate half of the proceeds from sales of “Sgt Camo” to the Military Warriors’ concert/fundraiser on Sept 5th

The fundraiser will be held in LeClaire Park in Davenport and will include a concert by Christian recording artists Michael W. Smith and John Waller as well as appearances by Pastor Matthew Hagee. Wounded warriors, including Jeremiah Workman (navy cross & purple heart recipient) will be recognized at the event and active military will be admitted free.

“After we decided to help sponsor “A Night to Honor Our Heroes” with ice-cream sale proceeds, we thought, ‘why not bless our troops in Iraq with Sgt. Camo Ice Cream.’ Lt Gen Leroy Sisco, founder of Military Warriors, made the necessary contacts and we’re working out the details to ship it to the troops. We are honored to do this and hope it reminds them of home, especially those from the Quad Cities area who love Whitey’s Ice Cream.”

Kathryn Bohn, concert organizer & promoter first conceived the idea to produce “A Night to Honor Our Heroes” in 2004 after seeing President Bush in LeClaire Park and writing a letter requesting his help to make it happen. Over the years, Bohn has produced other Christian concerts for pro-life organizations and The Salvation Army, but never gave up her heart’s desire to produce an event to honor God, Country and the military warriors.

In 2008, Bohn saw General Sisco on the John Hagee show and contacted him about producing the fundraiser for Military Warriors. The event is made possible by financial sponsors and ticket sales.

Tickets are $15.00 and are on sale at Family Christian Stores in Davenport, Ia and Moline, IL. National Guard and Reserves have a reduced ticket price and children 12-years and younger are admitted “free.”

Proceeds will go to help the Military Warriors foundation provide educational scholarships, recreational retreats & programs, family mentoring programs, financial planning and counseling.

My son was on the Roosevelt, a carrier. He had his laptop to play games, but seldom was he able to email. I've saved every email and they seem to have come when he was in a port like Dubai. When he was in port, he was more likely to call which we wanted more than an email. Security is tight for email and calls, so don't expect much "news." Just hearing his voice was enough. I believe he told me to not send phone cards because they needed the right kind for the banks of phones on the pier, set up for the Navy. He always said he'd rather buy them and know they'd work.

I have a friend who has a son on a sub. He'll call out of the blue and tell his mom that he's turning off his cell phone. Then they might not hear from him for months. You have to be careful with email to the subs. I think you're right, they surface to send and receive. I sent a message to this sailor, and it came back with a message that my message was too big.

Have him take you to the big NEX at the naval base as well as the Little Creek NEX. Navy Pride department! Take cash, because he has to pay for everything. We were always going to go to Busch Garden, Williamsburg, Jamestown, and never got to any of them! We stopped at Yorktown once. Smithfield (ham) is just south of Norfolk, and i've been told it's interesting. Ft. Henry or Cape Henry is worth a stop, but I think you need his ID to get in--It's between the boardwalk and LC on the coast, full of history and a lighthouse.

Now that I look at the picture, maybe those are the big medals. They sure look big. Anyway, isn't he handsome?! His momma doesn't care if the medals and ribbons were wrong!

I love Virginia Beach! I think I was in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News area six or seven times during the three years my son was stationed there. A GPS of some sort is a good thing to have, but the first few times I got around with a map ok. He lived in NN the first couple years, so it was easy since everything is mostly on one street. VB-N are a bit trickier, but once you're there, you'll find things. We always stayed at the Navy Lodge at Little Creek. Loved LC; it's a beautiful base with its own beach and the Lodge was wonderful! I hope Kami is the kind who will get involved with all the Navy wife support organizations and activities.

I asked my son about the Navy Ball--he said they all wear their full-size medals on the uniforms. (More money!) He has a small set, but is still waiting to find out about his purple heart to have his medals done since they have to be in a certain order.

I'm posting this picture as an example of the small medals, and also as an example of the wrong way to wear them. He's pictured at a teachers' award ceremony with one of his teachers from junior high who influenced and helped him long ago. He was supposed to not wear duplicates of ribbons and medals, but he didn't know that. Probably should have, but a Navy chief here said that lots of sailors make the mistake the first time. He won't make the mistake again. I won't leave this picture up permanently since he's embarrassed by not doing it right.

The Navy Ball is October 17. It's the date of or closest Saturday date to the Navy's birthday.

Sounds a bit like my daughter and her boyfriend--she's 5'4" and less than 100 lbs., he's skinny, but something like 6'6". They are quite the pair, but thankfully 25. He went with his parents, sister, and other relatives to Europe for 16 days, and my daughter cried every day. She and I always thought she could be a Navy wife, but that makes me think not! His mom apparently asked him today if he was going to ask her to marry him. And he asked our daughter if he asked, would she say yes? I can't believe he had to ask! So there's an engagement coming, I'm sure.
