Weddings, grad school. Sounds like a busy summer! We're heading to Tucson the middle of June for a couple weeks. The sailor and his two little girls are going too.

If you're in the mood, drive over to Davenport next Saturday for Armed Forces Day.

You two have a good time! If my husband and I weren't flying to Louisville for southern Indiana for a cousins family reunion, I'd be there. I haven't seen some of these second cousins in 40 years. I'll be in Grinnell off and on all spring and summer though.

I invite all of you to the Armed Forces Day celebration in Davenport on May 16. The celebration starts at 11:00. There will be displays, drill demos, and lots of fun till 3:00. Then the celebration continues with a dedication of the new American Legion building, a dinner and dance. Open to all of you!

I guess I didn't write down the 25th because it's not on my calendar. My ducks must have gotten lost completely. I won't make it on the 25th--we're headed to Indiana for a few days that weekend. I just noticed that on the event calendar on the right is Navy Week--Des Moines. I took a look at the page. It's anchored around the Drake Relays. Maybe doing something in Des Moines would be good that week, but I'll let someone else plan. We eventually will meet each other, but I encourage some others to get involved!

We had a great Easter drive to the farm where I grew up outside of Brooklyn. Saw my parents, too. Hope everyone has enjoyed their Easter!

Michelle, I hope that having your mom in the nursing home gives you some relief from stress. Someone else is in charge for a while so you can eat and get some sleep. Congratulations to Ethan!

What town is she in? Strange about the medicare. My mom has had two knees replaced and a shoulder and had to go to the nursing home after each surgery. Nothing like putting an old lady in a nursing home to make her want to do her therapy to get out! She didn't want to be with "all those old people." My dad was just in the nursing home for a chipped knee cap. Medicare and Humana paid except for the last week or so, or only part of it. I don't know which. Enough of this....How's everybody's sailor?

Michelle, we are truly in the "sandwich" generation, taking care of our kids (even though they're on their own) and taking care of our parents. I missed what happened--did your mom fall? Where is she? I am so glad mine are at Seeland Park in Grinnell. It's hard--they just sold their house on the farm--but they are in a nice condo with people around to check on them. My husband's mom in Tucson is in her own condo, but has great neighbors and his sister is about a mile away.

Just to prove that PGR isn't all funerals--we were invited to a Bettendorf elementary school this morning to help with an assembly and presentation of two quilts for brothers who lost their daddy in Iraq. The quilts were made by school kids on an AF base in England for the boys. (www.homeofthebravequilts.com) Beautiful quilts! The kids even earned the money to buy the supplies to make the quilts. While we were there, one of our members explained what the PGR does, with the themes of nothing is free and respect for the flag. Then the kids got to go see the motorcycles!

After that, we went to a rehab nursing home to visit some of the 48 residents that were flown here to Iowa from Fargo, ND, because of the flood. We handed out lots of little flags and got a lot of smiles. I had the privilege of meeting a WWII vet who had been a GM in the South Pacific--my son is a GM.

The neatest part of the visit was going to see a Marine resident from here though. The director said he hadn't really talked or smiled since moving in. Well, our ride captain (a Marine) walked in and barked, "Marine, do you have your shoes shined?" "Did you put the corners on this rack?" The darling old man came to life! He told us where he'd been trained, where he went, where he'd been an instructor. I got a kick out of it when he barked back at our Marine with "John Wayne it!" I'm guessing it's a reference to one of his Marine movies--I'll be asking my husband later about that.

Anyway, it was a great day. Tomorrow the Fargo folks get to fly home--one told us that it was like they'd been on vacation! We're going to do a flag line for them as they board the bus to the airport.
