I have a question for all you seasoned Japan Moms.  My son is coming to Japan soon and will be aboard a ship that has its' home port in Yokosuka.  I talked to our wireless provider (ATT) and it seems like they require both an arm and a leg for my son to talk, text or use internet from his cell phone while he is overseas.  There has got to be something out there that doesn't cost $2.00 a minute.  He has an iphone and of couse most of the cool apps require an internet connection.  We are not too keen on the idea of him having a $5,000 phone bill.  So my question is this--how do you handle communication with your Sailor?  What did you do about his cell phone here?

Is your son on the uss tortuga, mine is?  we use skype  a lot. Its  nice so see him.  His name is Sabin. Maybe they know each other
Thanks everyone for the helpful information. I knew I could count on Navy Moms HOOYAH!

Good morning,

I have two suggestions.  The first, and the greatest $ saving for us who have sons and daughters overseas is, SKYPE.  He will need a computer and you will both go to SKYPE.COM, download the software and ENJOY your time with your son, every week!  It's free!  Or it was when we signed on, and we use it to date.

The second, he will purchase a "Japan" phone, and use that to communicate with friends over there.  If you have to, you can call that phone with standard rates.

We too own I-Phones.  My son Zak, also stationed in Yokosuka, has NO DESIRE to have an I-phone in Japan, his friends experience horribly high cell phone bills.

Good luck.

Does your son have a computer that he is taking along to Yokosuka?  If he does you can both get on Skype and video chat online for no charge. My son is stationed there and we usually skype once a week or so. We stay connected for hours and have never been charged anything.  He also has an iphone and service thru a local or navy provider. Have your son ask around once he gets there to find the best deals. We discontinued my son's state-side service and phone while he is abroad. It would have been too expensive to keep it up.
Suan,
My son has orders to be aboard the USS Shiloh. However, those orders are now on hold along with everyone else who has orders for Japan. We don''t know what will happen but we assume he will have the same orders as soon as the stop movement order is lifted. I guess there is a chance that they could now send him somewhere else and if so we ill just have to roll with it. "Home is where the Navy sends us!" We thank your son for his service and I hope that he is safe and well. Thanks for your help.
My son is in Yokosuka on the CW he has an Iphone and he added the apps uses wifi and calls home that way. its a choppy call but hey I hear his voice... also he has an app that gives him a US number so I can text him at anytime and Im not paying international fees.. wOrks great!! there is no delay... if I can get an email I will ask him exactly what apps they are and I will let you know. Take advantage of AT&T this month all calls and texts to japan are free. well 60 minutes worth of calls..!

Thanks for the help.  What apps did he add?  So he just keeps the phone part off and uses wifi?  What is the name of the app that he got for texting.  My son has finished A school but because of the stop movement order we are not sure when he will go to Japan or if they will even still be sending him there.

Get skype on your compute it  is free. you can see your sailor besides talking to them.
