Family Members w/ sailor's on USS George Washington that left Japan in June

Does anyone out there have a family member that is on the USS George Washgton that deployed from Japan in June 2010?  My sister and I have not heard from my neice since before they left and we are wondering how things are going.

Not sure if they can send emails and if they must have their own calling cards to use the phones on the ship to call home. She just graduated from boot came in March of 2010 ao this is her first assignment and her first time at sea. We are very anxious to hear how she is doing and what job she has.

Also, don't know if they can receive mail on the ship and if they can, what the mailing address is. This is all very new to us and her recruiting officer left the area so we don't know who to ask.

Any infromation would be very helpful to set our minds at ease.

Thanks!

Normally, they can't call from the ship while it is at sea. Email service will depend on how busy she is and how many sailors want to use the shared ship computers as well as operational factors. As for the weekend prior to departure, there's a strong possibility she was very busy!

It is quite normal not to hear from them during deployment for weeks at a time. This is entirely normal.
there is a USS George Washington Group you might want to join....

Thanks everyone for your replies. It really helps hearing from other family members who know what's going on.

Also, thanks for the link to the USS George Washington site. I did't know it was out there : )
Kelly's Aunt, come over to the George Washington group. You will find lots of information there. They can call from the ship with a calling card but a lot of the phones don't work and the lines to use them are long. They can receive mail and packages on the ship even when it is out to sea. You will need to know what department your niece works in. Each department has it's own box number. Once they are given their email address for the ship they can send and receive emails. There is a lot they can't say for security purposes. We can't discuss where they are, where they're going, when they'll be there, etc. Depending on what department they are in some sailors have better access to computers than others. You may want to contact the ship's Ombudsman for information. If you go to the home page for the George Washington there is a link to the GW's facebook. If you click on that you can get information there and see pictures. Hope this helps.
Thanks Claudia - How do you get in touch with the ship's Ombudsman?
Hi
My son is on the US George Washington, can you please tell me how do I find the U S George Washington home page?
Our daughter is on the GW as of a week ago. She can only email. She gave me her address to mail packages.
Just wanted to let you know that I just got an 2 emails from my son on the USS GW and he said the computers they email from have been not working the greatest. My son told us they can't recieve any packages or mail for this month because they are extremely busy. Also when you email your niece, never ask questions as to where they are or going to. Try never to send things that will be depressing. They love to hear how much you love them alot! Your niece is probably nervous and working to hard to find the time to email. My son works 17 to 21 hour days. Also never tell them anything that can compromise their safety. If you get a chance I would go back to the office she was recruited from and talk with another recruiter. The office my son went thru goes thru different recruiters but they still help me with any questions I have and they are so nice to help reassure me on things I don't know. My son joined in 2008 and I still talk to the recruiters every other week. Utilize them, your not alone. So good luck. Lisa
