For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

**UPDATE 4/26/2022** Effective with the May 6, 2022 PIR 4 guests will be allowed. Still must be fully vaccinated to attend.
**UPDATE as of 11/10/2022 PIR vaccination is no longer required.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

New Mom
Hello Ladies,
My son left for Sasebo Japan on 8-12. He will be joining the USS Germantown. I am now a Japan Mom. He arrived yesterday and I am waiting for a phone call. He text me he arrived. I am a little sad, but happy for him. Any other mom's with sailors from the Sasebo area?
I am looking forward to getting to know this group; I have enjoyed lurking on the sideline. I will request the Voodoo doll if needed.

Hello Pat,
My son is in Naha Okinawa Japan. It was a bit different for him at first, and now that he has liberty he skypes me and I see that he is having fun and is doing well. You both will have to adjust to the time change but it is awesome seeing the different photos my son sends me on facebook.

My daughter is on the USS Tortuga based in Sasebo. She was there 3 weeks before heading out on her first trip. She liked the town and was enjoying the sushi. She is an OS, so did alot of cleaning while in port. She was able to text quite frequently and called a few times. Have not heard from her since she left port, but she told me to expect that at first, but it is still crazy not knowing. Good luck to you and your son.

Welcome new moms. My son was in Sasebo From March 2008 to Apr 2011. He married a girl from Sasebo who has a large family there. They will be vacationing there next year.
He didn't communicate much with me but here are a couple things I learned:
The USO has free phone calls to the U.S.
They all get a new cell phone when they get there. They will learn what suits them best from others there. My son had a cheap phone and plan for local use only. Others have smart phones and download free apps to text to the U.S. for free. There is a place on base to take the contract and have someone read it before signing it.
They offer free tours of Sasebo and the surrounding area.
They usually fly into Fukuoka and are met by a sponsor. There is also a military bus that runs 3 times a day (2 hr drive) and the train for a fee. They should travel with some yen which they can get at the airport.
They don't need a passport but they should get one before they go.

The drinking age in Japan is 20. They will visit ports with no limit. The navy drinking age is still 21. They will know this because they where selected for a foreign port because they have a clean record. I'm sure they have heard the lectures.
The number one food they crave when they visit home (besides moms cooking) is pizza. They like the Japanese pizza but it is really different.
The moms on this site have come up with great ideas for care packages. Just ask or start a discussion on it.

I love helping. My sailors mother in law is a "fish wife" in the market in Sasebo and he has lots of "inlaws" in town. (I would love to meet them). Let me know if you have questions for my DIL.

Hello ENMom, My son left San Diego for Sasebo Sept. 1. He is aboard the USS Avenger. I was a basket case until I finally heard from him reporting his first day was "f'n AWESOME!" and he loves his location, so I am okay now. Hope your news has been as comforting and all is well.
Also, really appreciate ALL the informational responses, and I will bring up my knowledge of these free phone calls home to my Sailor! -

Hi Pat,
My son has been on the Germantown for a year now.
He has enjoyed it & the deployments to different places.
He loves seeing the world & doing things for others - especially the children and the elderly.
We communicate a lot on Facebook. He does call when he gets the chance.
He was just home on leave in July. It was the 1st time home in 10 months.
I hope your son is doing well
It's not easy being a Navy mom. I'm here anytime you want to chat!
