Planning to visit my son in Sasebo, Japan. Still looking at the airline tickets for departure on
December 24 or 26.
Anyone has any advice on a trip to Sasebo Japan or anyone planning a trip to visit their sailor
in Japan. Thank you and Happy Holidays to all !

Make sure he can meet you and spend time with you. It is not easy for those of us who do not speak Japanese to understand how to get around, money exchange, so on and so forth. We went to Yokusuka in Jan. of 2011. If our son had not been there to meet us and show us around, there is no way we would have been able to go on our own. My biggest fear was getting lost. There is very little written in English. It was fun though, a very different experience. If you intend to use credit cards, not all are accepted and there is a fee for most, foreign exchange. Debit cards can be used but make sure you tell your bank that you are going overseas. Take money, lots of it. It is not an inexpensive place to go. Have fun.
Thank you so much for your information. My greatest fear is arriving at the airport and not seeing him and
not being able to communicate with anyone. I'm going to travel by myself so I was thinking of visiting
a travel agency and asking info on a group trip to Japan, Tokyo and meeting him there.
I will keep you informed which way I go. Thank you again !
I wish I could give you some advice but I haven't been able to go to Japan to visit my son yet. Probably never will because I can't afford it. Could you do me a very big favor though? If you meet my son, MA2 Allen P. Cady (he is stationed in Sasebo) can you give him a very BIG hug and tell him you are on N4M group with his mom, Cheryl and that you are giving him my love and hugs because I can't make it there personally? He is a K9 Dog handler. I wish you the BEST and SAFE trip! Wish I could go with you. Thank you.
Thank you for your words Cheryl. Big hug to you !!! I'm still in the air with the trip. I need to speak to my son.
He is still out at sea. He emailed me and said he will call me when his back in Sasebo...middle of Dec.
I will share your email with my son and ask him to look for your son and share with him the words of his
beautiful mom. God Bless You !
I will let you know if I finally make it to Japan. I wish you and I could go together. Take care.
We visited our son and his family in Sasebo last August. We flew to Nagasaki, as it's the closer airport and more convenient for our son to pick us up. We had to change airports (by bus) in Osaka on the way there, but we only had a terminal change in Tokyo on the way back. Getting around in Japanese airports was pretty easy, as the gates were close to the terminals, signs were in English, and if you looked the least bit confused, an airline employee would come up to you and offer assistance.
We passed through 7 airports on this trip-- three in the US and four in Japan. Three flights each way. It was our first trip to Japan, and we got to meet our granddaughter who was born in Sasebo.
If your son lives in Hario housing, bear in mind it's about 10 miles from the main base, but adjacent to a beautiful theme park.
My son is also stationed in Sasebo. Please let me know any wisdom you aquire from your visit as my husband and I are hoping to make the trip in the next year.
I hope you are able to make the trip, Sasebo is beautiful! I have been there for
summer and fall. I did see monsoon season, it rained but not that bad. Fall was beautiful, most days a jacket was fine. My family is on main base. I was able to go out alone everyday. I walked the Ginza daily, some very lovely shops to browse. I found an open market with all kinds of seafood, veggies flowers and many other booths of various products.
The locals are very kind. They try to help you as much as they can. I was shopping for an item that the shop did not have, they left the shop with me and brought me to another shop that had what I needed. The second place was a good distance away. Thats just how the locals are in Sasebo.
In Sasebo there are so many things to see. The parks are just beyond words. A boat ride around the 99 Islands takes your breath away, the beauty of the islands. The aquarium small but so much to see. I think you will be very pleased with your trip to Sasebo. Lets be honest the most important part of the trip is being with our family!
I hope to make the trip again in the spring. So many other places to see, more food to eat!
