What to bring? I'll email my sailor and ask him what he would suggest. I think your son is on a MN Sweeper. And there is not much room to store things. But he should be going to a barracks. Other thoughts:
1. was your son given his sponsor's or sponsors' contact numbers?
2. about carrying money - my son carried $250 in American. I can't remeber if he already had some Japan currency - have to ask.
3. ASk you son to find out what clothing he is to fly in. My son was told by teh USA base to fly in Uniform, but when he arrives to Japan - his sponsrs where upset because he had.
4. Call the airlines / airport your son is leaving from and ask what you need to show to be able to sit with your son at his gate.
5. Check out ahead of time where the USO places are located at the airports.

I know I am leaving things out - fill in the blanks all.

NDM - glad you had two wonderful weeks with your son. You sound so brave talking about him being in air right now. I on the other hand - have used 5 kleenexes. Hope he contacts you soon.

Kim - hope you are feeling better. At least the weather being in teh 50's helps .

VAL ! a girl freind ? He has a girl freind? When did I miss this gossip?
More details please.

As I type - I am looking at the picture of teh Sasebo Burger - thankfully dinner is in an hour.

Got to get - yes - still that Laudnry Fairy and dinner to finsih uo. Hugs all TLynn

My son doesn't like the pizza on base. It is a chain like pizza hut or something. Not the same.

I don't know if it is different by rate or ship but he had to stay on ship at first. They do not get any pay to live off ship until they are an E5. I thought he said that they weren't allowed to live off ship until they where an E5 but he was able to move into an apartment (off base) just before that. He had to jump through a hoops and get special permission. Sasebo does not have a lot of land. It is a shared base with the Japanese.

Gayle, more and more of the bases are setting up barracks for the single sailors on ships while they are in port. This is hard to do, there's a lot of factors. I don't know how far Sasebo has gotten with the Live Ashore program, but at least teh Navy is trying to provide safe and comfortable places to stay during liberty. I'm guessing he'll be on the ship, but I don't know for sure. Every ship, every base, can be different.

Shouldn't take with him? Not much I can think of. He may want to go easy on the clothes and personal electronics until he finds out where he'll be living. See how much room he has, and if he has a safe place to lock things up. Theft is a sorry aspect of shipboard (and barracks) life. You can ship stuff via USPS flat rate, so he may want to pack a couple small boxes you can send later.

He can get most things on base at the NEX. The variety of personal grooming items may not be to his taste, again, these can be shipped later.

Gayle, tell your son to fill up on pizza before he goes. That is what they seem to miss the most. Pizza is over $30.00 there and it is not at all like it is here.
Hey, we are back on food again.

Good morning everyone. It is going to hit 55 degrees today. I am going out in short sleeves.

Gayle - My daughter Katie is a DC has been in Sasebo, but not on the Guardian. It will be a year the end of April. Katie has traveled to Australia, Singapore, Phillippines, and Thailand. Katie was home this Christmas for 2 weks. We get e=mails pretty regularly and get phone calls now and then and treasure them. Packages take a weekewhen she is in port when I send via APO/FPO US Priority Mail boxes and longer when out to sea.

Instead of being disappointed, I recommend being supportive and making the best of the situation. Katie is doing just fine over in Japan.

Val, I don't mind the humor at all, I welcome it. for what is life without a smile and a laugh?

Kim... yes, I've been called by the ex-wife's name. By my MIL, what bugged me is hubby NEVER lived with his ex. Soap opera and he felt tricked/trapped. But yeah, I'm the evil other woman.

Good morning navy moms. It is going up to 50 today and sunny. I hope you all have a sunny spring day too. One son came home for Spring Break last night and the other is coming tomorrow night. Three loads of laundry already done, with more to come. Thanks for sending me the laundry fairy T-Lynn.
