Hi all. Just wanted to let everyone know that I will be leaving this site soon. My son will be coming back to the states next month. He was in Japan for two years an really did like it. His next duty station is Shore Duty and that will be for 3 years. I will be joining up with the new site sometime next month. It has been nice visiting with all of you. Hope everything goes great with your sailors.

Hi Ladies, I know it is so hard not to have your sailors home for the holidays.

Not sure if you have heard about the "Blue Candle Lighting" that is being planned for Christmas to honor our Sailors that cannot be at home so I added a thread above that I thought you might be interested in.

Hi everyone. I haven't been on here much since I joined but I am really feeling blue lately. My sailor, Daniel has been in Yokasuka, Japan since February. He is an AME3. He works on the safety equipment on the FA18 Super hornets. He just celebrated his 23rd birthday. He is married and has a son who will be 2 in February. He will not be home for Christmas and it too is the first time. His wife and son are still living here in Texas and will be going over to live sometime in January. He is really having a rough time not having his family there with him. He just seems so down since the holidays. It just makes me sad to hear him so down. I try to remind him they will be there soon. Anyway...thanks for listening.

Any ER visit is covered, civilian or not. A medical provider or MD visit must be referred, but any active duty can go to any base with a clinic. The trick is finding one that has a clinic and/or a full blown hospital. All sailors should carry a list of phone numbers, such as Tri-care, in case they need mediacl attention while on leave.

I was never allowed to carry medical or dental records on leave! The Navy is generally very protective of those ... mine were never in my hands outside of the hospital. Perhaps because he was transferring he had them? Just seems odd to me because it doesn't match my prior experience, not doubting he had them.

Tina, yes he should be able to go to the Air Force base. The closest military base to us is Fort Leonardwood in St. Robert's Missouri. I am not sure where the nearest Naval Station to us is? Once when my son was on leave, he got a real bad toothache and we drove to St. Roberts and he went into the Medical and Dental there and had the problem fixed. He has to carry his Medical and Dental records with him when he is on leave so that he has all the info that may be needed. Hope this helps.

Tina, my son asked the same thing and was told that in a true Emergency, he can go to the ER but if he can make it to a military base, go there for non-emergency care.

Only the airwing from the GW would be at Atsugi ... the ship itself is in Yokosuka, at the Yokosuka Naval Base. That's where the big hospital is, a very good facility, but as with many hospitals, the ordinary and routine clinics and such have gone to stand down for the Thanksgiving holiday. If the pain is too severe he can go to the emergency room. They saved my life twice, no exaggeration, and are very, very good. The problem is likely communication between the ship's medical and the hospital staff, plus the scheduling of the MRI can take time. Your son must be proactive in his health and pursue his care. It isn't that the hospital falls down on the job (usually) but that they're caring for such a large community of sailors and dependents.

Not much you can do on your end, but encourage your son to go to the ER if he's hurting. They are really, really good. Don't let his chief or anyone on the ship tell him to tough it out if he's truly in distress. I think he may have to clear an ER visit with ship's medical, but he should ask at the very least.

Small world story from Ogden, Utah ... my hubby';s retirement shadowbox sits on top of our computer desk. When the cable guy came to hook up the new modem, he saw the box. He did a double-take. He and hubby were stationed on the same ship in Japan many years ago! And stranger still, Hubby was this guy;s LPO! Of course I whipped out my cell phone so they could have a chat. Neither of them is from Utah, they just happened to both move here.

Julie, they only have 2 or 3 sizes of Flat rate boxes. They are small, but you would be surprised on how much you can stuff into them. I sometimes send my son 4 or 5 of these boxes and it still costs me less than if I put everything in one large box to send out. I usually take most things out of their larger box and just put the individual packages in the different boxes. I put a little of each in each box so that he gets a little of everything each time he gets a box. If I have more than 1 box to send, I usually send them out a week apart so that he gets things not all at one time. Of course I get him so much so that he can share with his buddies because I know that there are probably some guys and gals who don't get things from home as much.
