Hi Kathy C and Julie - I have a son stationed in Yokosuka and has been there for almost 2 years now. He has a house off base that he rents and when I went to Japan last Christmas for 17 days, I stayed with him. I would most definitely stay at the Navy Lodge if you can. We did a couple of different times here in the States and they are really nice. I went through Priceline.com for my airfare and if you have the money, name your own price. I believe that I go my round-trip ticket for less than $1000.00. I flew into Tokyo and my son met my plane. We took the train down to Yokosuka. While in Japan, we went to Komokura to see the Big Budda and spend several different days in Yokohama. They have a wonderful Mall in Yokohama and a Ferris Wheel that is almost as big as some of the buildings. I will try to post a couple of pictures of the Ferris Wheel that I took. I had a great time with my son. We spent almost every night eating out at different little restaurants. He had his favorites that he took me to and we tried out a few new ones. There is a Mall in Yokosuka also that we went to. He also took me to the movies twice. Most definitely you have to go to Japan to spend time with your kids. You will not regret the expense at all. I know I don't. My son is due to come back to the States sometime after the first of the year. He will be stationed here in the States for the next three years on land.

That makes perfect sense, Lauri.

Just remember, Japan is a dream for sailors who wish to buy electronics and cameras. The NEX will have them far cheaper than in the US, without tax. I'd suggest go simple, because your sailor will likely upgrade for themselves eventually.

I've been browsing the MWR site. There's a Costco in Yokohama! Gasp. How things have changed. And the restaurant over by the Lodge is now a Chili's. Well, not everything is an improvement, LOL (I have enough food allergies I usually can't eat at a Chilis).

I can't get Sasebo to come up.

I went all over the place in Japan by myself. I was actually in more danger near my apartment, because I'd managed to find a bad neighborhood just two blocks from one of the bar districts. More danger from the Americans than the Japanese, sadly. I was safer wandering Roppongi (nightclub district) in Tokyo! The second time I was stationed in Yoko, I knew to find a nice little house in a neighborhood with no businesses nearby.

I loved going to Kamakura, one of the ancient capitols of Japan, it is a very short train ride from Yokosuka. There's all sorts of temples and shrines there, and the famous Dia-buhtsu, the Great Buddha. I did go on a lot of MWR trips at first, but I was there twelve years and ended up exploring on my own. When hubby got a Harley, we really saw a lot of Hakone (near Mt. Fuji), Izo and Chiba. Fun! There's pics of us on Mt. Fuji in my photos.

Great pic of Josh ... ah, Halloween. Cool costume. Yes, our entire workshop would dress up for parties. Thanks for sharing.

Hubby has a version of adult ADD... he drinks coffee to go to sleep. Has a form of dyslexia too, but tests off the charts when given alternative IQ tests. I think a lot of bored kids are non-traditionally smart.

Julie,

There are about 6 pictures. They are on My Page. Look under Photos and then when that opens, look at My Photos. The first picture is the crystal christas tree at the Yokohama Mall.

I finally figured out how to put pictures out here. I have added a few from my trip to Japan. I will add more later.

Julie,

He is an OS on the USS Curtis Wilbur and he really likes his job. He first served on the USS Ronald Reagan. He was on the Carrier from the day of its start. He is a Plank Owner on the USS Ronald Reagan. He is very proud of his service in the Navy and he is hoping to make a career out of it. He says that as long as things go the way they have been, then he will continue to reenlist every 4 to 6 years.
