Anti M, I've been trying to absorb as much info on it as I can.  I did read the blog that you wrote on it.  Complicating all of it further is the fact that she is a foreign national.  She is taking her citizenship test in a few months but it's a process for sure.  I'm trying to give him the best advice possible but, wow, it's a lot.  I did tell him not to get his hopes up that she will be able to join him there in Japan but we will see what happens.  My thoughts are that if they can make it through what the next 3 or 4 years brings, then they will have a pretty good foundation for learning to live with separations and being flexible with whatever life throws them.   She is used to long separations with her family because a lot of them are still in Vietnam so if that translates over to their marriage, she might do ok with the Navy life.

Bobbie, if your sailor plans to take a spouse to Japan, he needs to know about command sponsorship. It can be tricky. I have a blog on here explaining the basics, but I am mobile and can't link it.

Cheryl, my son has only been a recruiter for a year and in NY state.  It is his shore duty.  He had 1.5 years of A and C schools, then 5.5 years of sea duty.  This is allowing him to go to school to get the 30 credits he needs for a commissioning program.  Hopefully he will apply in the fall, but he has to take this semester off because of the baby.

Maggs, I think that is their plan too.  They are not saying, but he has dropped hints.  Maybe, they will alternate countries.  They like moving to new places too and I know they would love to go to Germany.

Busmom and Youngestson - you are getting some great advice. Also email is better than texting (if you can text to a Japanese cellphone) & there is no charge for email (which they can get on their phones. My sailor says that is what everyone does over there. Also there is a unit change for texting. A box is always open & waiting for stuff @ our house. But remember space is at a premium - concentrate on consumables and SMALL, along with things that they won't feel bad having to leave behind or dispose of. Mine is always looking for COOKIES and the shelf stored bacon!!

Quick question for KIM was your sailor a recruiter in Mass. in 2013 ? My son's original recruiter had an Irish name & was from PA but he was transferred back to PA in 2013 before my son left for PIR. If so, small world.

Got the sailor back to GL yesterday.  Wasn't quite ready for that and knowing that the next "see you later" will be when he heads to Japan.  A mom that I got to know when the boys were in boot camp just put her son on his Japan flight New Year's Eve. Not ready for that but it's going to be coming up soon.  My son got engaged while he was home for stand down so we'll see how that will work out for a 2016 wedding.  Just not sure what to expect for any type of leave for him in the future.

TLynn, I can't wait for the baby announcement.

Maggs, glad you are feeling better.  I laughed when I read that you rested up until New Years.

I can't believe how big Nolan has gotten.  I love the picture.

Congrats to your daughter Blondie.  I bet you will enjoy planning the wedding.

Welcome new moms.  Busmom, I am near you in PA.  My sailor is 1 hour north of you.  He is currently a recruiter in Peekskill and married to a woman he met in Japan.  He is on paternity leave right now.

Once a Japan mom, always a Japan mom.  New moms are always welcome.  Jump in a tell us about your sailor and yourself.

The flat rate boxes are great.  I always had a box open on my dining room table.  As soon as it was mailed, I started on the next one.

The baby is doing well.  We came home last night.  He isn't eating much and is jaundice.  They kept him an extra day to Saturday to monitor.  Today he sees the doctor.  Yesterday was supposed to be the worst day, even his eyes were yellow.  I am waiting to hear the update.
