My son has been in about 2.5 years. About a year ago, he started having abdominal pain, been through a lot of tests, ruling out appendix, gallbladder, etc... had exploratory laproscopic a couple of weeks ago but still no determination of cause.  He has also had to see a psychiatrist about mental health issues, stayed both out and in-patient with mental health issues. Son states pain causing the issues.  He was in a secure field and has lost security because of the mental health issues.  He has been informed that he is being separated and goes to San Diego next month for what I assume is a medical evaluation to determine the type of discharge.  I'm just worried about the situation and that he will probably lose the educutional benefits and be uninsurable in the the civilian world.  Sigh.

My son got in trouble in Japan while on deployment. No charges were pressed by the prosecutor, however his ship has been out to sea for 6 weeks while he's been in Japan waiting for the prosecution to decided whether to charge him or not. Once they said they would not charge, his captain made the decision to discharge him... "general" which he told me means not dishonorable. He has to serve 45 days restriction before being sent home to be process out. He states he should be back to his base by the 22nd of November.  How long will it take to process him out? Any advise or help. I'm so mad, sad, every emotion. The one thing that was supposed to straighten out his life and he messed it up too!

I found out from the Ombudsman that his last day was Feb 22... my son says he still hasn't gotten this 10 day letter but we are planning on going to get him this weekend. I've asked him about his discharge code so I can make sure he's got everything he needs for any benefits that he will stll be entitled to. I'm not so sure he knows the right questions to ask and proper paperwork to have on hand. You're right.. he is still my child and we'll be here for him regardless of what has happened... he's learned a very hard lesson through all this and now we just have to pray for the best. TJ's Mom.. I hope the best for your son and his family. I know it's hard on everyone involved when something like this happnes

Zanymom4, My son restriction start Feb 7 still waiting for this 10 day letter. Was told yesterday he could receive his letter today or 10 days from now. He was removed from this ship also but my son has a apartment. His wife is due any day now so we are hoping they will keep him till the baby comes at least they will have insurance. I do think your son is being honest with you. I know they have a zero tolerance to drugs but I feel they should decrease there rank and make them stay in. I think some are doing it just to get out. Not 100% sure that not what my son did. Good Luck and all we can do is just be there for them they are our children even when they make stupid mistakes.

Hoping someone here can help.. my 19 year old son is being separated because he was caught with  spice. He has been in nearly 2 years. I know there is zero tolerance as there should be and hoping for some answers without judgement. He has served his restriction, is still getting half pay- they told him his punishment would be 'half months pay times 2', 45 days restriction and a general discharge. His restriction ended Jan 16 and since then he says he's not allowed on the ship he was assigned to. He has been staying at a friend's place since getting off restriction. They have to be out of that PPV in 2 days and my son doesn't have anywhere to go. My understanding is that the only thing my son is waiting on to 'legally' leave VA is a 10 day letter from the Admiral.  I honestly don't know how honest he is being with us about any of this. I dont' think the Navy will just kick you out with no place to stay until they have completed the paperwork process and how really, much longer can his pay be taken. I just want to get him home where he can start his life over. Any help will be very much appreciated!

How long they remain in the Navy depends on how long it takes to go through the system. In my son's case, he was in for about 4 months after he knew he was going to get kicked out. He had to serve restriction first, then it took about 3-4 weeks to do all the outprocessing paperwork. However, he was in Japan, so it was more complicated than it would be for a sailor who is already in the US.

My son is getting dismissed from the Navy due to testing positive for smoking pot. The stupids thing anyone could do. I am so disappoint and upset right now. He is my son and the bad thing is, he was a wife and their first child due next month. He been taken off the ship and is now at the base I guess on restriction other than he is off on the weekends and go home every night. They told it they would tell him when he can leave it may be up till March 1. Do any of you know how long they normally make you stay? Children they step on your toe when they are little and on your hear when they get older.

After more than a year, and Chris still without a job, two things happened.

First, we suddenly realized that he had been giving employers the wrong copy of his DD-214. He was giving them the copy that had the reason for discharge - which was "a pattern of misconduct," which sounds a lot worse than it was. So, we're guessing that employers took one look at that and shyed away from him forever. There are few employers around here, and they have long memories. His best 4-5 options are probably out of the question now.

Second, because he was getting depressed about being unemployed, etc, we took him for some therapy to help him get through this. He was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum - PDD-NOS, which is very similar to Aspergers Syndrome. We took him for a second opinion, which confirmed the diagnosis. He was in special ed for years to get speech therapy for what we thought was a childhood speech disorder, but the doctors said it was misdiagnosed autism all along. The speech symptoms he was being treated for were textbook "high functioning autism." He's pretty mild as autism goes, but very much explains the difficulties he had in the Navy.

Go to the discussion above "websites" and there are links to sites that explain benefits.

If it's a medical discharge based on a service injury, he should be getting an Honorable, and possibly disability. It entirely depends on what the medical issue is.
