Knit for the Navy

A group for those who knit or crochet that would like to blanket our sailors with a touch of home. Our goal is to blanket the entire Navy.

Ok, here are the basics. We are asking for handmade blankets/afghans that are twin bed size or smaller. You can knit, crochet, quilt, or make the hand tied (no sew) fleece blankets. (We are open to any other methods as well.) Any pattern or color, that is up to your creativity. Just be sure they are tasteful and appropriate.

After I receive the blanket/afghan, they will be collected and distributed to the ship of the month. Look for pictures of the finished blankets/afghans posted here. Any questions or suggestions can be sent to me or posted on our message board here. Thank you all for your help.

Due to the HUGE cost of shipping blankets, I am very sad to say that I can no longer accept blankets to mail to the ships. I hope that everyone will continue to enjoy the group and come together for friendship and support. Thank you so much everyone who make blankets for our sailors. I know that they appreciated them.

I buy worsted weight. It goes faster and you can find worsted weight that is really soft. Baby yarn is kind of fine and tougher to wash.

Terri, I don't know about surface ships. On the subs they get text only and he can't access anything off the sub while they are underway. Its that "run silent, run deep" thing. I do know the surface guys can have access to the internet but I don't know about anything else. I once asked Alex "how come the surface guys get to use the internet and not you". He gave me that look only a son can give you and said " its kind of hard to hide a carrier, but we aren't suppose to be seen or heard." Smart kid! LOL

Good morning evr1
Ok Joyce and Terri my heart is with you I say forget the pitty party and bring on the wine........because that is what our sailors are thinking............lol.......I think being on a ship they still can use their personal emails can't they???? I really don't know about ship life. But my son uses his personal email when they are not under the water.
So I say if you like writing long emails then please send then as far as pictures and stuff we use facebook and myspace then (you can be private if you want) and you don't have to worry about storing pics on your pc or jump drive. and if you want a copy of the pic you can copy from the site. Just some thought from me
I sure wish I could knit
but I must say that after watching the youtube that other night I have enough granny squares made to sew a blanket together ...WOOHOO...
now Terri if I can get some boxes I have about 10 blankets to send you i still have quilts to send.................oh my I think I might have to find a job to ship all this..............lol
