For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

His paperwork as he enters BC-bank & personal
First, my son is heading to boot camp and will need to choose his direct deposit.
Can he choose his current bank and change later?
Secondly, I am not his biological mother. He came to live with us 2 1/2 years ago due to a very bad home life. For all intents and purposes I am his mother, EXCEPT on paper. He barely speaks to his biological mother. She would not give me any legal status with him so I alone have been responsible for all of his bills/expenses.
I'm worried that if I were to die or something serious were to happen he would not be allowed to come home. Is there anything official to note my relationship with him?
Thanks for ANY info or direction.

If you have raised him as your child the Navy will recognize that. Often Aunts, Uncles or other people have acted as the patent and the Navy recognizes those people as parents.
As far as banking, if he doesn't have a Navy Federal Credit Union account already they will help him set one up in boot camp. -

I will ask my husband if there is something specific that needs to be done and let you know. (He's a Senior Chief that's active duty) I am a worrier so I totally understand your concerns. Hang in there!!

Ah, a fellow worrier :) I'm quite proficient at it. Always looking at what could go wrong, just in case, what if... It probably comes from my having horses-if they can get hurt by it, they find it.

Just heard from the recruiter and he mentioned his beneficiaries, of which I am one of. I wonder if that helps my case.

They have all recuits fill out a last will and state a beneficiary. That why you will be on his official list. He can also maybe make sure you are listed as his contact person. You can always once he is assigned somewhere, if a ship he can list you with his ombudsman probably.

I asked my husband and he said as long as you are listed as next of kin on his page 2 it doesn't matter about biological relationship. The term is "in loco parentis". I hope this helps. He said the Navy will recognize you as the parent so please don't worry.

Yes, he can choose his current bank although I do suggest that he choose Navy Federal. (See Things to Do in the Last Month before Your Future Sailor Leaves for....)
As stated earlier, it will all depend on who your future Sailor lists on his page 2.
