Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of December (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have December ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in December, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link.)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

KLO-navymom, that should be NFCU (Navy Federal Credit Union).   Be sure to check out the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future SailorLeaves for ... (clickable link)

Irene what is nfcr?

If he takes a small case and a very small bottle of solution--such as the starter kit--it is often able to be kept during P-days and then used at PIR.

My son wears contact lenses and doesn't have current prescription glasses. I know when they get to boot camp they have to ship everything they have with them back home. Will he be able to keep his contacts, lens case and solution until they fit him with military issue glasses?

Irene, yes, cut the mole skin into strips so it will be ready for him to use and make sure he knows how to use it to prevent/treat blisters.  See the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future Sailor Leaves for..., and it should let you know what needs to be done.

ok so I have found and purchased mole skin.  Can I cut it into strips to fit in his wallet?

I have him some calling cards, getting wallet sized pictures, addresses and phone numbers, I have him a watch as he won't have his phone to rely on for the time.  What else do I need to make sure is done before he leaves.  he is going to sign up for nfcr when he gets to bootcamp.  I feel like the next two weeks will fly by and we will not be ready

CruAn I am also with att and they are putting a temporary block on his phone.  This means the phone will not be able to be used but I will only have to pay the  dollar add on fee instead of his bill with internet which is  dollars.  He is an added line on my account so I don't know if that makes a difference.

Alison, Thanks for the info. Time for a carrier change.

I've found that the moms here are generally more knowledgeable than most recruiters. The rapid changes that go on at Great Lakes are more than the recruiters, who have to track new recruiting rules, can keep track of. The changes I've seen in my three years on this board are... extensive. A huge portion of what was done when my son joined has no relation to what goes on today.

When my son joined, most sailors stayed at boot camp until the week after PIR, parents entered through a different gate, parents could hang out at the NEX while waiting for their sailor all three days, sailors who transferred to A-school at Great Lakes got weekend-long liberty, etc.

Now none of that is true.

This is yet another change for recruiters to hear about, then remember.

Thanks Arwen and Alison.  We are going to attend the swearing in.  Our son is okay with it.  We aren't going to the hotel tho but our son will have his cell phone with him.  I need to figure out how to mail home a Iphone since the batteries don't come out and need to talk to Verizon about the military hold.  We went to the bank today to fill out the 1199 A form for direct deposit. the lady at the bank was very nice and told our son that after he received his military card to send it to them and they would upgrade him to the best banking and it would be no charge.  My son is just going to go with his bank already established.

We told my son's recruiter that there was a 4 ticket only based on what we are reading and he said - no everyone can get it.  I think the recruiter needs to learn a bit more!
