Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of December (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have December ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in December, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link.)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

Thought I would share, I bought an advent calendar and redocorated it and am usung it as my countdown for my sons leaving! I'm not a crafty person so this was a huge accomplishment, lol. Actually, the advent calendar at Trader Joes was not very Christmasy so it worked perfect. 24 days and counting!

23 days left (not that I'm counting). Every day I have a new checklist of things to make sure we address.  With the exception of "comfort clothes," his new task is weeding though his clothes and trashing anything not presentable. Socks with holes, stained shirts etc. Should be interesting ....

Here is a recent Forum Discussion I did that explains the changes and one on the policy about not using another recruits slots.

Both show or have links to confirmation by RTC.

EXTRA GUESTS - Will NO LONGER BE ALLOWED into the GRADUATION (PIR) ...

Adding Guests to another Recruits Access List - Against RTC Policy

Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on November 12, 2012 at 5:32am

No, I'm afraid it is against RTC Policy to "trade" spots. So sorry. Even if you cannot go to the actual ceremony you could still go and see him if that works for you. i hope it works out :-)

Since about January 2010, recruit PIR groups averaged 5-10 divisions, and they became lax on how many guests were allowed. With a half-dozen divisions each week, there was little need to limit guest entry.

A lot of moms on this group are from the last two years, and are speaking from their experience that "most extra guests get in." That was true, but conditions have changed.

Instead of small PIR groups every week, they're skipping weeks and making each group larger.

Since they began putting large groups through the system (there are currently 9-15 divisions per PIR group) there just isn't enough room for everyone. So they're getting strict in ways that they haven't been for the past few years.

You can pretty much predict how difficult (or not) it will be to get extra guests in according to how many divisions there are in your recruit's group. I've seen PIR groups with only 4-5 divisions - they and their guests rattle around in that huge place - they could have 10 guests each and still have room. My son's division had 9 divisions, and there were two entire bleacher sections unused, even with some recruits having 5--8 guests. With 12-14 divisions it is getting crowded and extra guests are lucky to get in, and at 16-17 divisions (which I've only seen once) they turned away a LOT of people.

Everyone is adult so I'm good there. Won't have room for my stepdaughter which she is in college anyway, so I'll just have to tell her there's a limit and I can show her. Thanks.

Tell all your sailors now - the secret to making the RDCs happy and to get promotions in bootcamp isn't to do it all perfectly - it's to do it very well, then turn to help your struggling rack-mate or nearby neighbor get it right, too (unless they are told not to).

If their rackmate is slow - as soon as the faster rackmate is done, s/he should turn to help (without completely doing it for them).

Generally the recruits who do a task perfectly, then stand there, proud of their their prowess while their rackmate repeatedly fails - is given poor performance marks, and is selected for nothing good.

Similarly, the overly proud but struggling recruit who refuses help is also given poor marks.

The test isn't about how good the individual's skills are - that will come in A-school. In bootcamp, the test is about whether you can work as a TEAM.

Which is also the answer to the final exam.

Lita, yes, the limit is 4, but Active Duty and Retired go in without being on the Access List.  (See page 2 of http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/pdfs/FamilyGuide.pdf to help you plan who needs to be on the list, but remember that the PAO has indicated that there MAY be a change for minors from those 12 and under back to those 2 and under, which I have heard was the rule several years ago when they frequently had large TG's.)

Comment by lemonelephant on November 11, 2012 at 11:11pm

marine_navy mom, the rules about extras have changed and they are not allowing extras into the Drill Hall--NO stand-by.  Extras cannot wait in the Visitors Center, but must go to the NEX and wait until after PIR to see the new Sailors.  We are also seeing that the rules about minors will be changing soon as well.  After the new year for sure, but possibly sooner, only minors 2 years old and under will get in without being on the Access List.  They are going to continue to permit Active Duty and Retired Military personnel with current military ID.
