DEP-Leavin' for bootcamp in December

This group is for N4M members that have a loved one leaving for bootcamp in Dec..I will leave the year open so that even future Deppers leaving in the month of Dec of any year can join...Lets share stories, information, concerns, and questions

Latest Activity: Oct 2, 2022

Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of December (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have December ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in December, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link.)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

mamawalrus, my son will be doing Advanced Electronics. After BC he will stay at Great Lakes for most of next year. That is where his classes are for his job. I guess that is a good thing. My son's going away party and birthday party are going to be 11/20. His birthday is 11/21. I know this will be a sad occasion. Alot of his friends are going and also new friends from the DEP. Only one person from his DEP leaves the same day as him. The rest leave next year.

Lynne@ THANK YOU! It is reassuring to know that there are those of you who have passed the test to keep us going and encourage us along the way. I have a few other post BC moms that I have been talking to and I know they are strong women who are an inspiration to me. I LOVE the way you said" earn out NAVY stripes", I never thought of it that way but you are right we do earn them too!!!!!!! :) Any personal advice for PIR?

JTW'SMOM@ your son is absorbning all he can lol. I think mine is too but his is more his music and eating constantly. hahahahahhaha

Bev618@have a great trip and my prayers are with you through this trip and know that our group will be rooting for your speedy recovery and will be here when you get back to hear about your travels. So glad you are able to make it back for swearing in.

Purplemom@my husband and son sound like your pair. Must be the moms in us worried about every little thing, even the things we have no control over! LOL
Be sure to take lots of pictures and I cant wait to hear about your cruise!!!! Prayers for a safe travel!

Kris121@ at the top of this page is a link regarding Christmas and also if you go to the FORUMS tab at the top of page, click on it and it will take you to many different discussions, There are many on December, PIR and things to expect during BC, what to wear, picture ordering and so on. I have become addicted to this site lately as time is going by....... My son leaves DEC 8th as well........he will be going Spec Ops. What about yours? and welcome to the group!

As you prepare for your kids to leave home and go to boot camp it is really a time of mixed emotions...I know on the one hand you are proud of the choice your child has made and yet sad that they leave home a child and the person you see at PIR is an adult. That was hard for me. All I can say is laugh often, reminisce, mkae memories and get into the letter writing habit on that Safari by sending cards and your son will be in the habit of getting them when he goes to boot camp. Or leave him a bunch of little notes to be opened on certain days while you are gone that is chocked full of the kind of encouragement you would be giving him if you were right there...he would appreciate it I am sure.

My son is now almost 2 weeks post boot camp and little by little I see that young man returning...the laughter, the smiles, and easy going nature. I am glad to see some of that return. You all about to embark on a journey. You will need each other and seasoned moms to help you, much more seasoned than me...lol. We'll be here...so remember plant a smile a face, wave goodbye, and then behind closed doors, grab those kleenexes and have yourself a good cry while you tell your cohorts here at Navy for Moms how you are feeling. We'll be here waiting...ready to help you earn YOUR navy stripes: proud and strong! On and when you dry your tears...remember you have a letter to write...lol!!

I have to go on a business trip without my son, leaving tonight, coming back Sunday. I wish I could pack him in the suit case and take him with me. I am taking him on a "suprise" overnight trip to either the NC mountains or coast over Thanksgiving weekend....just he and I. No step dad. No sister. Just us. I am going to focus on that till I get back on Sunday. In the mean time when he is not working he is glued to the "Black Ops" game....guess he is getting as much as he can before he leaves.

My son leaves on 14 Dec to report to the MEPs station and then gets sworn in on 15 Dec - we return from Africa on the 14th just in time to drop him off at the recruiters station -- so my time with him is really getting down to the last few days - we leave on Thanksgiving Day -- wasn't exactly what I had planned when we scheduled our trip (Aug 09)! -- he has been waiting since April so he is ready to go. And as in a previous post he is 'acting' more worried about me as I was diagnosed with Stage 1 Breast Cancer on 10/22 - so I know that this is weighing heavy on him too - but he is such a trooper that I know he will do wonderful -- I am so proud of him and can't wait to see him his uniform at PIR! He has definitely made me proud - he lost his father to cancer when he was 13 so he and I have a very special bond -- OK I am just rattling and I think because I am going to miss this site when we leave for our trip -- it has been great because I have been able to let him know alot of what to expect -- he was asking me for his shot records the other day and I found them and he is going to be very disappointed that he needs to go through that all again - I promise to tell him so he won't be surprised!!

Well good news. My son went to the US Consulate today and they gave him a form that is considered an offical, valid acceptable substitute for his Social Security Card. They also did the application for a new card and it should be here in two to three weeks so it MIGHT make it here in time. If not though he still has the Consulate form. I am trying to get in touch with the recruiter to ask him to come and sit and talk with us. I want some of my questions answered about this whole pre-shipping in Italy thing and over the phone isn't working for me. We will see. I know in the end this will all be worth it. It is hard enough to send him away without having to jump through so many hoops first.

Thanks for the prayers mamawalrus. We can always use all the ones we can get. I know I am stressing about this way more than anyone else in the house. My son can't wait to go and my husband just says it will all work out.

The goodnews is we leave for our trip on Thursday. So I will wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving and I will be back on the computer on Dec. 1st. At that point I am sure we will all be going crazy as it will be just days before they all start shipping!!!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Enjoy those kiddos before they all head out on us!!

I have a son leaving for BC 12/8. We live fairly close to the base in Great Lakes which is a plus at least for graduation day. I am going to miss my son very much also. There hasn't been a day go by that I haven't either seen him or talked to him. This will be very hard for me as well as him. He has two younger siblings whom he is very close to and I am concerned for his brother who is like his best friend. Having next to no contact with him for 8 weeks will be hard for all of us, but I know that this is time for him to bond with others and get in the daily routine of Navy life. He will be at BC during Christmas and I was wondering if they let them call home that day. If anyone has information or has a loved one leaving that day It would be nice to hear from you.

It doesn't matter if recruits have already been vaccinated - they will ALL get ALL of the vaccinations again, even if they have their records indicating they just had them. It's an assembly line - they all line up and move through a gauntlet of corpsmen with air powered vaccine guns. They don't have time to stop and review each recruit's records. Everyone gets everything.

They will also be vaccinated against stuff most civilians don't get. I don't know the list, but it's pretty extensive.
