Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of January (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!
If you have January ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in January, ...then this is the place to be. :-)
Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link.)
Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones) Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.
Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.
The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.
After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.
Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)
**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

lulu - I am right with ya. NOT a path I wanted for any of my kids, but of course I would NEVER let them know that, in fact I am very much the opposite in "public" or around them.
Stephanie, You will have most of Friday and then will meet him at the airport on Saturday because he will most likely fly out the day after PIR--that can change for some due to flight availability. (See Liberty During PIR Weekend within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) for more information on haw that works.)
This is going to get a bit confusing with two of you with the same Username posting back to back--perhaps one or both of you can think of a Username that will be more unique. See OPSEC and PERSEC (Making Changes To Your Profile) for how to change your Username and some other changes that you may want to consider.
Getting nervous (well, more nervous). My son's last day of work is tomorrow. He's been working at the company I work for since June and we ride to work together every morning. I'm going to miss that. Saturday is his going away party. We bring him to the hotel on the 28th and then we'll see him swear in at MEPS on the 29th. I'm not going to the airport. I don't think I can take another "good bye". Does anyone know how long they get for Liberty after PIR if they are going to Groton for A school or does it just depend on the flight? I'm wondering if we'll have most of Saturday or not.
Valeriesalas my DTR will leave from S A on the 29th. Post info on your experience with MEPS. We are from the Belton Temple area where are you?
KylesMom you are lucky that you are only an hour from Chicago. We are in TX so it is a long way for us.
MrsB - I'm with KylesMom on the fact that I also have learned everything on this site. The people on here are awesome with directing you to where you can find accurate information. I know more than my daughter (the SR). Her Recruiter hasn't been too bad, most of what he has told her has been correct so far but she hasn't left for BC yet either.
I already sent her with a calling card. I found out the info online the morning she shipped. My point was just that the recruiter was a total waste of time. I really hope at some point that I asked asked about my experience with the Navy prior to her shipping because what I will say about him isn't going to be very nice. There are a long list of things he did and didn't do. In addition, only SOME RDCs allow calling cards and such sent in the mail, others do not. I got this straight from RTC on the phone. For some unknown reason my daughters bank (Wells) closed her account the day after she shipped. So the direct deposit form and debit card she had with her were invalid. (hence why we needed the POA we were told we DIDN'T need bc she has no financial assets) ALWAYS GET A POA!. As it is the situation has been resolved, but when I called RTC to ask if I could mail a new debit card to her, the guy who answered told me specifically that some RDCs will allow things sent in the mail and others will not...however important it may be.
MrsB, hang in there. My Sons recruiter left him high and dry since they went on Holiday standdown and he wasn't even back to handle my Son's final 1 week shipping meeting. I ended up having to take him to a new recruiter 6 days before he shipped, and he went on Tuesday the 8th. As far as the mis information, I have found everything out from this website!! Had it not been for all the veteran Mom's in here, I would have been totally lost!! As far as calling cards, you can always send 1 in a letter to her once you have an address, no worries. There is a link on this site to callsforrecruits, they will provide you free calling cards. If you get a regular card, be sure to load it and activate it before you send it. You have not missed any calls from her yet, they aren't allowed to make calls other then those for more information as requested, and they will call you on the Navy phones. Social calls will not be for a while!! We are all here for you, and are learning together! So many other's are way more experienced then I am, and I am sure they will offer more then I have, I just wanted to let you know, your ok!
How were everyone's recruiters? Our was just dreadful. So far (due to the recruiter) our whole experience with the Navy has been like dealing with a Ma & Pop Shop. The last 6 mths of DEP have been forgotten forms, mis-information, my daughter even had to meet with an investigator due to so many discrepancies on the paperwork that was filled in for her. The couple of weeks leading up to shipping out we asked many times for info on what she could and couldn't take. Nothing. In fact, he said specifically we didn't need a POA (which it turned out we did, just 2 days after she shipped... mess with her bank account), he also told us she didn't need a calling card, despite calling card being top of the list on the RTC website. Too many things to list, but horrible experience with him.
