Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of January (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have January ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in January, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link.)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

wishing there was a way to slow that darn countdown at the top LOL!! Not ready to say goodbye yet! I am afraid I am going to do a crying mess at the airport!! I don't know why I am feeling so weepy, I sent two kids off to college but I feel much worse sending him away to BC.

MEPS ~ Some recruits are picked up the day (usually evening) before their last MEPS visit and delivered to a hotel. They will share their rooms with other recruits from different military branches. In the wee hours (usually 4:30 to 6:00 AM) they are taken by bus to the MEPS location. At this time they will have their more interviews, physicals, paper work, etc. The family members and friends can go to the MEPS location and wait in a designated area - sometimes being visited my your SR. The recruits are usually given lunch by the USO volunteers during this process. Through out the day, recruits leave for the airport by bus. Some airports have a USO where they may wait for their flight. Family and friends can join them at the USO. Once they arrive at O'Hare Chicago, they can use their meal vouchers to buy food and, as instructed they call for their transport to Great Lakes RTC. The waiting starts...as more and more recruits arrive and wait. ~ kk

CrystalH ~ Yes you are correct. The SRs only know each other by their last names and sometimes the state they came from. ~ kk

Hello N4M members! My son left for BC 9/21, PIR date was 11/20, and he is currently on hold for "A" School. If I can answer any questions or comment on your concerns, please let me know. There is no way to completely prepare for this roller coaster. I found my friendships gained with other GL BC division N4M members was the best support. First piece of advice; The best place to have a good cry is in the shower AND it is acceptable to cry at traffic lights!

Have a great New Year! ~ kk

My son leaves on Jan 19th. He is leaving from our home in NC on the 5th to St Louis where he signed up. He is leaving a coupe weeks early to prepare for a test he will take the first few days into BC? Anyway I am trying to make him go through his entire room to pack the items away that we will keep until who know when, what he wants sent right away to CTN in florida and things to send later. Combine that with the holidays and me getting teary eyed over the mention of him leaving, what a mess!! Not to mention, he wants nothing for Christmas because he can not think of anything he would need!!

I guess I have to drop out of this group too. Chris' ship date got moved up AGAIN to Dec. 16. Wow, from one-and-a-half months to wait to one-and-a-half weeks!

Good luck ladies, keep your chins up. Fair winds and following seas to your sailors!

53 days and counting... Whew! It's too far away still. This is sooo exciting. Chris is almost there!

What kind of preparations are all of you making? Right now we're making the hard decisions on holiday gifts, stuff he can use while in the Navy only. Soon we'll start going through all of his stuff. We're going to pre-box the stuff he wants to store away for later, stuff he will want at his A school, stuff he will want at his duty station, and a whole lot for donations or yard sales.

He and his siblings are bickering over who gets what game systems and games. This should be a fun battle, especially because his younger brother leaves for college this summer, so he can't take much either. Which leaves little sister (age 12) to inherit most of the stuff.

Hi, I'm Arwen. My son Chris ships out on January 21 from Portland, Oregon MEPS. It was March 21, but he put a request in for his date to be moved up, and he got word today of his new ship date.

We live in a tiny coastal town far, far from anywhere and anything, but we're newcomers. In the last 10 years we lived in the Denver and San Francisco suburbs. Chris will be glad to get back to civilization.

Chris signed on as an IT and gets to keep the job despite the date changes. Right now he's working on his fitness and his PQS stuff, but he has no job (16% unemployment in our area - chances of getting a temp job are slim and none) and he flunked out of college for lack of focus. So he's bored silly waiting for his ship date.

I'm a Navy vet myself (HT/DC), as is my husband (nuke MM submarines). I have a combination of experience/knowledge, much of which is outdated, but I'm also a research queen so I have a lot of new info too.
