Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of January (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!
If you have January ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in January, ...then this is the place to be. :-)
Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link.)
Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones) Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.
***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.
Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.
The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.
After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc.Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

My son left 1-12. I received a letter last week, but still no phone call. I was disappointed not to get another letter this week yet

Thank you all. We did not get a phone card (but I am sending one Monday) so he must have used his ditty bag one.
On a more cheerful note, ran a 15K in my hometown with my "Proud Navy Mom" shirt and hat. Can't wait to send him the pic. Passed a couple of Navy recruiters (said so on their shirts) while running and made sure to tell them my son was in week 2 of bootcamp! I am so proud.

Bustersmom, your recruit received a phone card in his black backpack or ditty bag. Don't worry if his division makes calls he will be able to call. See Phone Cards and Phone Calls.

Theresa, calls this early are often VERY short and yes, some (many) recruits are upset; things do get better. Don't be crushed. He will be fine when training rally gets going and he gets to know his shipmates and they start working together. Send encouraging letters and don't mention how upset he was or that you are crushed. Let him know how proud you are and how you are planning to see him in his dress blues on the 27th. The next call should be longer and he will most likely be in better spirits. He;ll be writing tomorrow, so know that the letter this week may also be a bit down, but that will change. But I did just get his letter. And now I can send him my running letter I started when he left and continue to write him. His PIR is 3/27.

What division is he in?

I got my second call from my son a little bit ago. (he left 1/27). He was upset and the call was very, very brief. He would not say what was wrong. I can only guess it was homesickness and maybe fatigue. I had read on the FB group to prepared for your SR recruit to call home upset and to try to keep conversation supportive and encouraging. So I did try but he cut the call so short I really did not have time to think of what I should say. I wish I could have said better things. My heart is crushed.

The Navy only does dental work that is needed. The dentists at the RTC consider if there may be a problem in the future and remove one, two, three, or all four of the wisdom teeth if needed. If there is a question, they may indicate that the teeth are to be checked at "A" School and removed then if needed. They also may put off removal of wisdom teeth until later if there is dental work that needs to be taken care of first. Some may not need any wisdom teeth removed; my Sailor still has his wisdom teeth over 6 years later. If it is determined that the recruit does need to have one or more wisdom teeth removed, this is scheduled at a time that will be the least disruptive to training and often several in the division have it done on the same day so they are recovering together. The recruits have 2 days SIQ and have someone who checks to see that the recruits are taking their pain meds and drinking plenty of water as directed. They then have at least one day of LLD and must be checked before returning to full training. We often hear that recruits have the wisdom teeth removed on Thursday or Friday, so they have the weekend to recover when no new training takes place. This is similar to the recovery time given in the civilian world. They are well taken care of and there have been recruits who were happy to have the time to rest and others who didn't have to have the teeth removed who wished that they had once they saw how their shipmates were treated while they had to clean the head or do other jobs in the compartment and continue with PT.
